What a nice surprise!
It is the best movie based game ever, and one of the best horror survival game, with really good AI, amazing sound design. Stealth is very important in this game, but you have tools against the alien, despite you can't kill it.
The collection more than worth the money. Outside of the base game which can have 18+ hour of gameplay (depending on the difficulty), you have survivor mode, and a game mode which let's you play the first movie' scenario, trying to trap the alien. All of the actors (sans Ian Holm) reprise their roles!
The game single handedly proved that 2014 is the death of games journalism, as both IGN and Gamespot scored it 5.9/10, and the IGN page has something like more than 2000 angry comments. Reviewer said: "The AI of the alien is too unpredictable." - an unkillable monster, the perfect organism, is too unpredictable, therefore the game is hard. My god, how these people live at all?!?!?

The year was 1995, when me and my 11 year older brother saw a gaming magazine with a stormtrooper on the cover. That magazine was the first we bought. The game was Dark Forces.
I remember the demo could fit on 10 3,5" floppy disks and I played it hundreds of times. I think those were the days when thousands of us played demos over and over, until we could speedrun it. So yes, speedrunning is not a new idea. We just didn't brag about the time (unless you are Doom players with their "below par time" bs).
Back to Dark Forces. It's another "doom clone" which is better than Doom itself. It has Star Wars music, has some nice cutscenes which set the tone of the game (this ain't Ryan Johnson's SW comedy), and a likeable protagonist in Kyle Katarn. The guy who become the Chuck Norris of the Star Wars Universe. The guy who stole the plans of the Death Stars in the first mission (which Disney retconed, but who cares tbh), and went onto achieving even greater things.
Everything is in the right place in this game. The environment is very Star Wars-y, very well put together. Typical 90s level design with maze like structure. Fantastic! Especially the extra confusing sewer level. F that level! ;) (Thieves Guild in TDP is still better)
The sound effects and music is well ported, and the whole atmosphere is just right. Of course the story is predictable, since we know the movies, how it ends, but the gameplay and the journey is more important. From the title crawl, through every level just glued you onto the screen.
How badass is Kyle Katarn? Even Darth Vader himself admires the guy!
The game was such a success, that in 1997, Dark Forces: Jedi Knight was published and it was the first SW game with force powers and lightsabers (sp and mp too). Worthy sequel btw.
Dark Forces will always have a special place in my heart, just like that magazine, which I still have.

Btw, don't worry about the sewer level, GOG has the playguide which you can use to progress - if you want to. Beware there is no in-game save, just levels, and their is also old fashioned "life" system (think of Wolfenstein 3D).

Today is April 26th, aka "Alien Day". As I am a fan of the Alien movies (well the first 2), and some of the games, I will post some stuff today.
Let's start with the last good Alien media, Alien:Isolation. Humble Bundle has an Alien Day promo for the game (yeah I just casually disregard Colonial Marines and the last AvP gameI, which is really nice!

You only need the Collection stuff of Alien: Isolation as this has the main game and all the DLCs. The DLCs are not afterthought.
The original crew of the Alien all came back to reprise their role, except Ian Holm, who was already ill at that point (Rest in Peace). And we can choose who we play as in many scenarios. Other then that the game has survivor mode, where we have to collect stuff while the alien is on our ass.
The main game has a nice story, essentially it completes the Alien story to a trilogy, since it plays between Alien and Aliens. We play as Amanda Ripley (Ellen's daughter), try to find Ripley and finally after many years she got a solid lead about her mother. But of course we are getting into a little bit of trouble.
The game has fantastic atmosphere and it's like that we are in the first movie. There are limited cutscenes, and not much handholding. Expect more stealth and surviving (crafting items, sneaking, etc.), and less running with guns.
Luckily the Alien's AI is smart, and not much scripted stuff going on, which means that the game has great replay value. I recommend Hard difficulty for any players, and this is devs' recommendation too. The music is spot on. The AI is one tought sob, and no wonder that IGN and Gamespot gave the score 5.9/10, cause the "Alien is too unpredictable". Journalism from 2014 ladies and gentlemen.
Anyway, go buy the game, you will have many hours of gameplay. If you are a fan of "Alien", you will love this game!
I also recommend this game to stealth fans, it has great sound effects, and good gameplay mechanics.
