This dissertation investigates Las Vegas as the ultimate laboratory of late-stage American desire: a sun-bleached empire where greed, spectacle, pharmaceuticals, and spiritual vacancy converge under fluorescent light. Through immersive participant-observation, chemically compromised journalism, and direct confrontation with casino priests, highway patrolmen, and the reptiles of the American Dream, the study asks whether freedom in modern America is merely a better-decorated form of captivity. Special attention is given to gambling as civic religion, narcotics as philosophical method, and the casino carpet as a map of national decline.
