"After the 1980 eruption of Mount St. Helens devastated the local environment, scientists set a few gophers loose on some patches of ground, hoping they would kick up bacteria and fungi.

That uncovered fungi … created a microbial community that allowed plant life to better obtain and retain nutrients."

  6. Five or so years ago, @Chasm49 scanned and shared some old slides taken by his brother-in-law, my late lamented Uncle Wes. ...including this one, which I simultaneously think is really cool *and* am mad at Wes for risking his darn life to get. (He was fine! But he probably shouldn't have been there!) (Also I really miss him. Wes died in December of 2020 and nothing's been quite right since.)

  7. 45 years ago today was the eruption on Mount St Helens (thanks other people on here for reminding me). Remember seeing bits of this news photographer as part of a BBC Horizon soc. The full footage is haunting stuff esp later in the video as he is shrouded in ash and darkness.

  8. Mt. St. Helens and Mt. Adams

Timing is everything with photography. And that timing often relates to light.

In this case, I have flown and photographed this scene probably a hundred times over the last decade, but I never saw the Toutle River lit up like a silver path to St. Helens.
