  6. Distinctive “sheep’s back” shape of #MountMonadnock, #NewHampshire, USA

Viewed from near Jeffrey Center, one can discern that the near face is steepest. That face was downstream when the Laurentide Ice Sheet was scouring #NewEngland in the late #Pleistocene. The ice plucked boulders from that side, and ground a more gentle slope on the northwest side.

Monadnock is a popular climb, with many trails. It is 965 m, but is more than 300 m taller than any peak within 50 km. My #landscape #photo

  12. Shape of a sheep or shape of a wig?
Roches moutonnées are glacially scoured rocky hills with planed-off slopes “up glacier”, and steeper “plucked” sides “down glacier” as the ice sucks chunks of rock up. The etymology is obscure:

Many south to southeast slopes in New England are steeper than northwest slopes, e.g., Mount Monadnock in south central New Hampshire, USA.
