Today we went to the Gornergrat and had beautiful views over the white giants. Saw the Monte-Rosa-Hütte for the first time, pretty camouflaged in the snow. Can you find it? Mastodon does sometimes bad things to the quality of the uploaded pictures, like this time. Still visible but difficult.
On the left by the way the Defourspitze (highest point of Switzerland), on the right the Liskamm with the Grenzgletscher flowing down between them.

During this year's General Assembly meeting of the SAC Sektion Niesen :sac: the hut warden couple of the Almagellerhütte (which belongs to the Sektion) were celebrated. They have been the wardens for 40 years! Their son is taking over now, so it stays in the family.
Found a nice video by the son about being a warden of the hut (in Walliser German but with English subs).

Was on the site of SAC Sektion Niesen :sac: to register for the upcoming General Assembly and reread a bit on the history of the Sektion.
One of the two huts that the Sektion runs is the Almagellerhütte (built in 1984) and it has been too long since I have been there.

Mountain panorama with Castor and Pollux in full splendor. On the same picture also two mountain huts are located (there is also a bivouac, but I was not able to find it). The Refugio Mezzalama CAI is situated at 3004 meters and the larger Rifugio Guide d'Ayas is at 3420 meters. The second picture is the same, but with the huts circled.

Die Doldenhornhütte wird in diesem Jahr 2025 erneuert und bleibt aus diesem Grunde die ganze Saison geschlossen. Die Neueröffnung ist auf die Saison 2026 geplant.

Having spent 5 days in mountain huts of the Austrian Alps, this is what I was craving for the most (the second one was a shower). Other than the physical effort, food is the biggest challenge on these multi-day hiking trips. The meal options almost completely lack fresh veggies and fruits, and are mostly meat oriented. The vegetarian options are limited and lack protein therefore I often resort to eating meat. Quite the opposite of my everyday diet.
