Their mission is to find mountain gorilla families, monitor their well-being, and detect any threats to their safety. Coming from communities living on the outskirts of the Park, our 50+ community trackers know the forest, the terrain, mountain gorilla behaviour, and local dynamics well. This expertise, acquired over the years and reinforced by training in monitoring, data collection, and safety, makes them central to mountain gorilla conservation efforts in Virunga. RT by @EU_Partnerships: Last Friday, Virunga's monitoring teams and trackers, with Dr Fabrice of Gorilla Doctors, conducted a routine health check of the Wilungula troop. Thirty-six family members were observed and appeared to be in good health.
Named after silverback Wilungula, the only named member of the family, the group is one of 11 gorilla families in the Park and, alongside the Baraka family, one of two groups still in the process of being habituated.
