The Man Who Invented Motion Pictures: A True Tale of Obsession, Murder, and the Movies

I suspect I heard about this book when reviewed by Conor Kilpatrick from the iFanboy Pick of the Week podcast, but I can't be sure. Their year-end wrap-ups and Mediasplode episodes are great for new finds... when they don't get derailed talking about basketball or baseball (two topics with zero interest to an Australian ignorer of sportsball). It seems like the kind of book Conor would read: an early history of motion pictures set in the last gasp of the Gilded Age with a dollop of true crime thrown in.

You may be forgiven for thinking that Thomas "Patent Troll" Edison was the inventor of the motion picture camera, but it was actually his assistant William Dickson that worked on the development while Edison messed about with mining equipment that never really worked. Edison manipulated patents and worked the courts, leading to his pre-eminence, but was others, such as Edward Muybridge, Etienne-Jules Marey, the Lumière brothers, and Louis Le Prince whose shoulders Edison and Dickson stood upon. It's a fascinating tale, full of rich detail of the period, the many developments that lead to the motion picture cameras and projectors that dominated culture in the 1900s, and the lives and struggles not only of Le Prince, but his wife. I already disliked Edison, but this book fuelled the fire, showing him to be as nasty and grasping as I believed. If you're a buff of history, technology, or the movies, then I'd recommend the book whole-heartedly.

The Man Who Invented Motion Pictures: A True Tale of Obsession, Murder, and the Movies

I suspect I heard about this book when reviewed by Conor Kilpatrick from the iFanboy Pick of the Week podcast, but I can't be sure. Their year-end wrap-ups and Mediasplode episodes are great for new finds... when they don't get derailed talking about basketball or baseball (two topics with zero interest to an Australian ignorer of sportsball). It seems like the kind of book Conor would read: an early history of motion pictures set in the last gasp of the Gilded Age with a dollop of true crime thrown in.

You may be forgiven for thinking that Thomas "Patent Troll" Edison was the inventor of the motion picture camera, but it was actually his assistant William Dickson that worked on the development while Edison messed about with mining equipment that never really worked. Edison manipulated patents and worked the courts, leading to his pre-eminence, but was others, such as Edward Muybridge, Etienne-Jules Marey, the Lumière brothers, and Louis Le Prince whose shoulders Edison and Dickson stood upon.
