Common Desktop Environment comes back after 2 years with v2.5.3!

Two years after the last point release of Common Desktop Environment, a new point release has been released this year, bearing version 2.5.3. Unfortunately, it’s nothing major; just a subset of bug fixes that are mostly development-related, such as compiler warning fixes to reduce the clutter during the build process.

For those who like the old-school desktop UI that is similar to old HP-UX (Visual User Environment) and Solaris Unix systems, this one is for you. CDE 2.5.3 brings some of the big changes, such as support for more mouse buttons in dtwm.

Improvements were also made to the built-in terminal emulator, including fixes for copy and paste system. You can see the full commit logs here.

And the reason I included the rewild and decolonization tags is because you can see in these histories of fairytales how Christian cultural colonization of Europe has tamed these ancient tales, taken away their bite, watered down their power. And YET the core of these tales has survived eradication attempts, and adapted to a hostile habitat. Which is simply phenomenal. What is it our collective unconscious is trying to tell us? Why are certain symbols so important to remember?

This is all along the lines of other recent threads where I've unpacked how the artificial culture of whiteness has erased the real cultures that we all once had in our European homelands pre-Christianity.

There's this channel on YouTube, The Resurrectionists) that digs into the ancient origins of European fairy tales. It's really interesting. I'm watching the Frog Prince one right now. The best one I saw is about Jack and the Beanstalk, which is filled with deeper mystical meanings in stories that go back to the earliest history and ancient worldviews.

I enjoy thinking about the collective unconscious, and this is a way to look directly at it. Fairytales are the memories of an "organism" that lives longer than hundreds of generations of human lifetimes. I'm one of its neurons. You're one of its neurons. And when we die, the fellow people (neurons) that we taught will carry on these meanings written in a language that few of us can speak....

...yet we all know it.

PAISLEY - whether you call it a pattern, design or motif, it’s intrigued me since before I could read.

It’s been a very long time though since my regular paisley affirmation posts dropped off. It wasn’t due to lack of intention but rather, the inability of search engines to pull up new content.

For whatever reason, I have had some fresh success in finding some things to share. I genuinely hope these were written by actual reflecting human beings.

Just keep in mind, like most human endeavours, the story of paisley is more complex than one might think. Competing claims of origin, ‘ownership’, colonialism, adaptation, integration and reinterpretation all seem to be there. I’ve shared a V&A deconstruction previously, but I will just run through some of the various pieces in these posts.

Les premières impressions en risographie de deux de mes motifs sont arrivées !

C'était un test et il est réussi. En comparaison à une laser, la riso est plus douce, plus subtile tout en restant contrastée. L'utilisation d'un papier non couché amène la touche finale. Je crois que je ne pourrai plus m'en passer...

This time it's a #toolbar written in #motif. #xmtoolbar

#xmtoolbar was written sometime in 1995 -- I cannot find the author's name, apart from 'Spiff'.

It's a catchy name, but there were quite a few toolbars like this which emulated #fvwm goodstuff, which was a forerunner to what is now #FvwmButtons

With #xmtoolbar you can build up a panel with pixmap icons (XPMs) and launch programs. In #xmtoolbar's case, this can be done interactively and then the running configuration can be saved to disk for #xmtoolbar to load next time.

This time it's #mgdiff

#mgdiff is a graphical frontend to the #diff command, written using #motif. It was originally inspired by a program called #gdiff which only ran on SGI machines.

It allows for viewing the difference between two files and to write out the merged result to a third file, if desired.

This is version 1.0, 1994, by Daniel Williams.

#mgdiff implements the implements the Scrolled Region recommendations of Section 2.3.4 of the OSF/Motif Style Guide (release 1.1), meaning that the arrow and paging keys will work to scroll as well.

I had to tweak the code only a little to override a custom getline() implementation.

I also recall using this application in ~1996.
