So, for a while now I've been working in creating a web site for a more maintained set of information for #motif programming, xlib programming, etc.

It's perhaps a work in progress still, but the idea is to pull together all of the tidbits of information that's been floating about recently.

If anyone has any desire to help, the repo for this is here:

Deployment happens via Codeberg actions, once code has been pushed on the `main` branch.

I hope someone finds it useful or at least interesting.

I've got a massive book by O'Reilly on Fonts, and I've never really read it. I bought it because back in the day it seemed like something I'd be interested in.

My knowledge of fonts stopped at the XLFD specification which quickly became out of date, alas.

What was interesting about xmbdfed though is the way glyphs (if that's the correct word?) were created on a grid. This instantly reminded me of a similar concept on the BBC Micro, alas, I cannot recall the name of the program now.

The majority of people in the rising Motif resurgence are using Tim's fork because it's being actively maintained and is getting actual fixes and improvements. IIRC there were some actual memory pointer issues with Motif's string handling that would look fine but had subtle issues underneath; Tim actually fixed those issues and unfortunately the side effect is that SegFaults can now happen. You can look through the man pages in Tim's version to see what needs to be changed and then wrap it in a macro if you want to support both new and old (which is what CDE does). If you're stuck, you can file a bug report on Tim's repo https://github.com/thentenaar/motif or try to catch him on IRC in Libera Chat in the #motif channel
