@mos_8502 #Motif IMHO simply wasted a lot of space. I'd rather prefer the aesthetic of #Amiga #intuition or rather of #MagicUserInterface that has been nicely reimplemented as #freeAsInFreedom software by #aros (they called it #Zune)

FreeBSD 15 + CDE is probably the closest you can get to sitting in front of a high-end UNIX workstation without owning a time machine.
Running Common Desktop Environment in 2026 feels strangely refreshing. No blur effects, no Electron, no notifications fighting for attention, No ai written code, just Motif, terminals, man pages, and a desktop paradigm that was already mature before I was born.
Current setup: • FreeBSD 15.0-RELEASE • CDE • dtwm • bhyve • Motif everywhere
Today’s activity: reading bhyve(4) manuals and pretending I'm a UNIX admin in 1996.

@NationalGeographic @photography-NationalGeographic
Nat. Geographic presents 22 #stunning #photos from its archives, curated by M. Tessler from the section #PhotooftheDay. They show #authenticity, #nearness, and the photographic preservation of unusual #fleetingmoments. I think they prove that great photography is not determined by the camera used or the #motif, but by the #photographer's subjective #perception of a scene.

This is... *Chef's kiss* they really knew how to market their library in 1997.

This is a fascinating time-capsule read about #motif #unix and the early #linux times. It is maybe a little #retrocomputing but not entirely.

I've been playing around a bit with #motif and there's a pile of distro patches (Fedora, Debian, etc) and there's a sourceforge page with pull requests.
No pull requests have ever been accepted, the official ICS bug tracker is offline and looks like has been since 2021.
Who maintains Motif now? Does anyone? Do we need to do an "xorg for Motif" if we want to keep it going?

It is happening!
Is it still #retrocomputing if you can do it today on a modern computer?

Mystery solved: "The problem is that there are two VendorShell widgets. A dummy is provided in the Xt library, but a widget set will rely on its own being referenced. If you mention Xt first, the linker will choose the wrong one.
Motif code will wrongly assume the Motif VendorShell has been class- initialized"
Computers were a mistake.

Nice. This used the #CDE desktop, based on #Motif. I did prefer the earlier #OpenWindows / #OpenLook, though. Partially because I was involved in the development of that.

Common Desktop Environment comes back after 2 years with v2.5.3!
Two years after the last point release of Common Desktop Environment, a new point release has been released this year, bearing version 2.5.3. Unfortunately, it’s nothing major; just a subset of bug fixes that are mostly development-related, such as compiler warning fixes to reduce the clutter during the build process.
For those who like the old-school desktop UI that is similar to old HP-UX (Visual User Environment) and Solaris Unix systems, this one is for you. CDE 2.5.3 brings some of the big changes, such as support for more mouse buttons in dtwm.
Improvements were also made to the built-in terminal emulator, including fixes for copy and paste system. You can see the full commit logs here.
For the sake of reminding you of Visual User Environment, here’s the picture:

I started writing an IRC client in C using Motif... not quite sure where it's heading yet but thanks to work I did recently on a Perl IRC bot I managed to get the SASL+CAP timing done pretty easily by porting it over :D
Libera is very particular about what connects and whether it needs SASL.
Slightly better than using netcat I suppose ^_^
Edit: and it compiles+runs on Tribblix!
