Stumbling Block

It seems I have always been stumbling, tripping over the unintended in a fog of wandering wonder.

The mist has been ever around me, my cloud by day. I am enveloped by mystery.

You do indeed love to surprise me, O God;

two girls find shiny stones in a fountain and their joy chases away the despair at not finding a loved one,

the hospitality of friends lightens the weight upon a heavy chest from a returning to what was and the traveler can breathe again into what will be,

a mother’s words and the night breeze dries a daughter’s tears and she can smile at the deep thrum of a bullfrog,

lovers lie for a moment in the morning and the frustrations of yesterday fade into the quiet beginnings of another day.

It is time then.

I rise up into the bone crackling morning, my body protesting, my spirit already stretching out along the places I will see.

Inside, I find I am ready for more stumbling.

Meet Me at the Seaside Cottages by Jenny Colgan

Janey Carter lives in a cottage by the sea in Carso, Scotland. She has an adult son and daughter.

She works as an audiologist at the local clinic. Carso is a small town, so everyone knows everyone and everything about everybody.

Essie Carter has moved on with her life. She got a degree and a good job in Edinburgh with an investment firm. She is happy until the company she works for relocates to another country and they don’t offer to take Essie with them.

Essie has a fancy boyfriend and a small apartment that she loves. It breaks her heart to have to move home with mom.

Essie and Janey help deliver some pups in a vacant house in the neighborhood. It is one of three vacant homes. There is more to this part of the story, but I will leave that for you to find out when you read the book.

The dog’s owner is an unhappy divorced man with a young daughter he rarely sees who Janey finds attractive.

The owner of the property is a local guy who recently bought all three homes in the hopes of flipping them.

A few of Essie’s friends find out about the vacant property and make a proposition with the owner to let them invest so that he can make more money.

Essie in the meantime doesn’t see much of her boyfriend and becomes involved with the local who owns the houses. She starts out helping him manage his remodeling project. Essie and Janey both develop relationships with the two men in the village making it all a little messy.

This is a story of a mother and daughter who have grown apart and overtime become closer. They learn from each other about what is important in life and what they may be hanging on to and maybe shouldn’t.

I loved the setting for this book. I have always wanted to see all the United Kingdom. I loved the characters and the way the different storylines were weaved into an interesting story. I felt that by the end of the book, all the loose ends had been explained in a satisfying way.

I didn’t like that I didn’t love the story enough to rush through reading it. It was one of those books that if I hadn’t been determined to finish it, I could have set it down and not gone back to it. I think it was the middle that dragged. By the time I got past the middle, I did get more into it and finished it because I wanted to know what happened.

This is the first book that I have read by Jenny Colgan, but I would read more. I do enjoy her writing style. If you like women’s fiction with strong female leads set in Scotland, maybe you should check out this new release.

I had a bookish adventure recently. I love to attend author events. We have a local indie bookstore that holds a lot of author talks all year long. The last one I attended was for Gabbie Hanks with her debut novel – Nasty Little Secrets. This is a thriller, but it sounds like it has a little humor too. She is a local author who moved to Iowa from Florida. She had a good turnout that evening. Her book club showed up. She also provided cupcakes. I come for the books and the talk, but sweets are an added incentive. We have several indie bookshops, but this one is the oldest – Beaverdale Books. I do look forward to the next.

I had a dream about my Mom last night. I haven't had many since she died. I spotted her in a crowd while I was riding my new ebike (I do have a new one). I called out to her and she immediately came running toward me but never reached me. She never reached me in real life either.
