The other phone call I've made is to the garage.
We've had an email telling us to book our car in for a service now it's 12 months old.Except the manual says that servicing is due every 2 years.
I suspect this is a minor #scam on behalf of the main dealers - many people are used to annual services but this is no longer necessary with many EVs.If we'd have just taken the email at face value, we'd have had to pay for it because the #Motability lease will only cover the correct service intervals.
-
I've been doom-reading about the changes to the #motability scheme.
Sacha's car is on the #motabilityscheme due to her multiple disabilities and is essential for her wellbeing.
I honestly don't know how much I'm reading is paranoia or is actually going to affect us.
We are in the fortunate position that, if push came to shove, we could afford to go onto a standard lease, but it would take a few sacrifices, and I suspect insurance costs might be high (let alone the stress of the annual renewal dance).
We'll find out when her renewal comes along (assuming the Reform Company don't get elected and they decide to put down the disabled population).
Sigh.

A scheme imposed upon a group of drivers who often have little or no other options - especially wheelchair accessible vehicles.
No such scheme imposed upon any other group of drivers.

That's me finally ordered the #Kia #EV4 Air trim today, went for blue, the red was a bit too dark. Collection date is 30th June when my current #Motability lease comes to an end on my #Hyundai #Kona.
I'd say if yer on the #MotabilityScheme and able to order yer next vehicle now, get to yer local KIA dealer before Wednesday 1st April, when the advance payment is due to change. Given the popularity o this vehicle, I'm expecting that to increase. Don't forget to give it a test drive!

This year I'm handing back my #Hyundai #Kona #EV as agreed per the #Motability scheme. Been looking for another EV as it meets my needs, even though I don't have a home charger as I live in a first floor flat.
Had a test drive of a #Kia #EV4 yesterday, thanks to #FiskensOfForfar, such beautiful car, had to remind myself that I was in a GT-Line S model & that I won't get all the toys in the Air trim 🙌 Kia removed the GT-Line trim from the scheme yesterday morning. No idea why.

One in three new cars in Wales now taxpayer‑funded Motability vehicles
South West Wales hotspots
Wales has emerged as the UK’s Motability capital, with one in three new cars registered in 2024–25 leased through the taxpayer‑funded scheme.
In Neath Port Talbot, nearly seven per cent of residents are entitled to a Motability car — that’s one in fourteen people.
Swansea has the largest absolute number of awards, with 13,536 residents entitled, representing 5.4 per cent of the city’s population.
Carmarthenshire records 10,807 awards, or 5.7 per cent of its population. Bridgend has 8,484, equal to 5.8 per cent.
Pembrokeshire shows the lowest rate locally, but still 4.8 per cent of residents — one in twenty‑one — qualify for a Motability vehicle.
A lifeline for independence
Campaigners say the scheme is not a perk but a lifeline. It enables disabled people to live independently, access work, and participate fully in society.
Kat Watkins, from Disability Wales, warned that the proposed changes could isolate disabled people and make them feel like “second class citizens.”
She said reforms risk preventing people from accessing work and could lead to social exclusion. “Without reliable transport, disabled people are cut off from employment, education and even basic social contact. The Motability scheme is not a luxury — it is a necessity.”
Local voices echo that concern. Derrick Farr, from Barry, who had a leg amputated, described his Motability car as a “lifeline” to independence and said he would be “lost” without it.
Budget reforms spark controversy
The debate has intensified following the Government’s Autumn Budget. Chancellor Rachel Reeves confirmed that tax breaks available to Motability will be reduced from July 2026.
VAT relief will be removed for “top‑up” payments made to lease more expensive vehicles. Insurance Premium Tax will be applied at the standard rate to Motability insurance contracts.
Luxury marques such as BMW, Audi and Mercedes‑Benz have already been removed from the scheme. The Treasury says the changes will save more than £1 billion over five years and ensure Motability continues to deliver for its customers.
But young disabled people have reacted angrily, saying the new charges add hefty and unfair costs. Disability Wales criticised the Chancellor’s use of the phrase “generous taxpayer subsidies,” arguing it fuels misunderstanding of how the scheme works.
Claimants do not receive cars for free. They surrender their mobility allowance — a benefit designed to offset the extra costs of disability — to lease a vehicle. “Framing the scheme as a hand‑out undermines public support and stigmatises disabled people,” Watkins said.
Political battle lines
Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch has pledged to tighten eligibility further, arguing that cars should be reserved for those with serious physical disabilities.
The party has gone further by promising to block access to Motability for people whose entitlement is based on mental health disorders, claiming the scheme was never intended to cover psychological conditions.
Welsh Conservative MS James Evans welcomed reforms, saying the scheme’s “explosive growth and spiralling costs” must be contained.
But disability advocates strongly oppose restricting eligibility to physical conditions only. They argue that severe anxiety, PTSD, autism or ADHD can make public transport impossible, and that cars are essential for daily life.
Disability Rights UK and more than forty charities warned the Chancellor that cuts announced in the Budget will have “dire consequences” and risk “pricing disabled people out of the scheme.”
Disability Wales added that the focus on “luxury” cars ignored functional needs, noting that larger vehicles are often required to accommodate equipment such as wheelchair hoists. “What looks like a luxury badge to the Treasury may be the only practical option for a disabled family,” Watkins said.
Disability Wales warns of wider impact
Disability Wales has described the reforms as being driven more by negative media rhetoric than by consultation with disabled people.
The organisation fears the changes will make life more expensive and more difficult for those who already face barriers to independence.
Campaigners highlight that the removal of premium brands ignores the reality that bigger, solid‑built cars are often necessary to carry medical equipment.
They also warn that taxing insurance and advance payments will hit younger disabled people hardest, adding costs at a time when they are trying to build independent lives.
Watkins said: “The danger is that disabled people are being punished for political headlines, and that risks turning a lifeline into a battleground.”
Disability Wales argues that reforms must recognise the diversity of disability, including mental health and neurological conditions, and ensure that independence is not sacrificed for the sake of savings.
Watching the road ahead
Across Wales, the figures underline the scale of reliance on Motability. With 33 per cent of new car sales linked to the scheme, Wales stands apart from other regions such as the North East of England, where the figure is 26 per cent, and London at 24 per cent.
As reforms loom in 2026, South West Wales will be watching closely to see whether changes to tax reliefs and vehicle choice reduce access — or whether the scheme can continue to meet the needs of thousands of local residents who depend on their cars for independence, dignity and daily life.

Today is Budget day in the UK and so I will mostly be staying away from the news, social media, consciousness… But I really needed to write a thread because something’s been spiraling in my head for days – Motability. The threatened (and now, partially implemented) changes are emblematic of so many problems in politics. So for those of you who don’t know…
(be warned, this'll be a long one)

This is literally just “ooooh disabled people shouldn’t be seen in nice cars” #ukpolitics #motability
-
There are two reasons that Motability includes “premium” brands:
1/ they are often the ones that meet the needs of the users with features like parking assistance for those who cannot see behind them
2/ the leases are often cheaper than non premium brands as their resale value is so much higher. The effect of these changes might well be that Mobility actually costs the government MORE money 🤦♀️

It's my wife's #motability car.
She loses her PIP mobility payment for it, and the upfront payment was frightening (particularly at its only a three year lease).
But for the independence it gives her I believe it's worth it.If it weren't for PIP & Motability we'd be scrambling about to afford an ancient Toyota I expect.

My current #car project (for want of a better term) is to try to hand Sacha's #motability car back to the dealer with the least possible amount of petrol in the tank.
It goes back at the end of its lease next Monday and I think I've judged it right by putting 12 litres in yesterday to cover an estimated 175 miles between now and then (there's some in the tank already).
It's a bit petty but I don't see why I should pay for fuel we're not going to be using.
(Motability cars are auctioned off and go straight back on the market as used cars by the dealers who buy them) -
I'm having mixed feelings about this week already, and I'm still in bed on Monday morning.
It begins with this morning when Kasa, our daughter, is arriving. She's here because I've got to be dragged, kicking and probably screaming, to a family birthday meal in 'celebration' of my birthday tomorrow. I will maybe wax lyrical later on my exponentially increasing hate of my birthdays as I get older.
I will grin manically, and it'll be nice to have most of the family together, but I won't be ecstatic.Wednesday will be a treat of a trip out on Sacha's birthday - there will be a big reveal on here on Wednesday. (She knows about it).
(Yes, our birthdays are a day - and a year - apart)
At some time this week - hopefully - we get to collect Sacha's replacement #motability car, so that's exciting.
So - here we go !
-
Car dealer who faithfully promised Sacha's new #motability car would be at the dealership on Tuesday this week now tells her that it's still in Dagenham.
And why did I have to chase him for the information? So, she ain't getting it this week!
She's not happy.
(I'm not chuffed either) -
Sacha has left me in charge of the cat and the cooker while she is out getting her nails done (something I don't really understand, but it pleases her).
I am determined not to confuse the cat with the cooker when it comes to turning the vegetables on at the determined time.In the meantime, I'm sitting on the patio in the last of the afternoon sun listening to Bossa Nova and admiring my earlier gardening efforts.
We've had a message to say that Sacha's new car (#motability) should be ready for collection soon after the 10th June - so the excitement will be ramping up.
That poor EV charger need feel unloved no longer. -
Gooooood morning tooters!
I'm awake too early again - not that I had a great night's sleep. My shoulder is hurting - maybe I slept on it awkwardly, or maybe it was the digging yesterday.
#Today? you ask (or not).
I've got to take Sacha's car to the garage for its annual service and first MOT . It's a peculiarity of #motability that before you hand the car back at the end of the lease it has to be serviced and have an MOT certificate. So, I'll take it to the garage, get the bus home, and after lunch I'll go into #leicester city centre to mooch about until they ring me to say it's ready, and then get the free city bus up to the garage.
It's a bit of a pain, but it's maybe a chance to do some sketching in town, and maybe buy a new pair of pyjamas (with fully working elastic at the waist). I'll also get a bit of exercise with the walking around.
Make the most of your Maundy Thursday
-
A bit of a late start for me - but I've been busy adulting.
The solicitor I need to talk to about our daughter has finally, finally responded (with a half hearted apology). Now all we need to do is pay them and set up the appointment.
What other type of shady business requires payment up-front to talk about a job they might or might not be able to do?I've got the kitchen floor washed and the cat litter tray clean. The bins are emptied. Several small spiders are now homeless.
Talking of Kit the new #cat - she is going out into the garden for brief explorations, but not staying out much.
We've got a trip out this afternoon - we'll stop off at a new (to us) cafe for a light lunch at Ulverscroft Grange #Leicestershire - it has good reveiws from some of my Tai Chi pals. Afterwards - we're talking about changing Sacha's #motability car. We're hopinng to go full #EV with a #FordCapri
We've got a Tesco delivery due at around 6pm - and..... that's it for #Today.
Have a good 'un pals
-
Another night of pretty good sleep.
I went to bed with the thought of how losing Sacha's PIP might affect us. I need to build a prediction into The Big Spreadsheet ™ - my guess is that *for us* it won't be disastrous, but might lead to a major belt tightening exercise. Of course, less income means less money going to the local shops & businesses, but no one considers how disabled people fritter away their benefits.
Anyway - talking of #PIP - we are going to two car dealers #today to see if our next #motability car is likely to be a Hyundai Ioniq5 or a Ford Capri.
The tech in the Hyundai seems overwhelming, and the layout of the Ford seems distracting. Hyundai seem to have very long waiting times.
Sacha can't order until next month by which time the scheme choices will have changed. We're going to a café for lunch which will be a pleasant change - and it looks like we'll be able to have lunch in the sun.
Whatever you are up to - do it well, but more importantly enjoy yourself!
-
Tomorrow is March.
Sacha has a #motability car lease which means that we have to change our car every three years - which is a mixed blessing.
There's a window between when she *can* order a new car and when she *must* have ordered one. That window opens at the end of March.Advice we're seeing from other Motability customers is that we need to have made our choice as soon as possible before the window opens - partly because of some extremely long delivery times.
Of course, the complication is that the list of available cars changes at the start of April! We've started looking at EVs and are currently smitten with the Hyundai Ioniq5, but we are going to look at the Skoda Enyaq and the badly named Ford Capri in the next couple of weeks.
Test drives upcoming! -
My wife was advised to start looking for her next #motability car much earlier than usual - so we've been to visit 4 car dealers in #leicester today.
Three of the four had no disabled parking places available for their customers.
Vauxhall & MG had cones preventing access to the disabled spaces.
Renault had no parking spaces for anyone - the only obvious disabled space had a demonstrator car parked in it.
Hyundai passed the test (and were extremely welcoming & helpful).I think this shows how they view not only their disabled customers, but all customers.
It's a disgrace.More next week.

G'morning!
It's audibly windy outside but nowhere near as bad as previous storms (yet). For us, wind from the south-west is normally a worry as it's the only direction where we're exposed. We're in the English East Midlands, so nowhere near a coast.
I've got a major tussle with the dentist later this morning - it's a 90 minute appointment to sort out the post crown that fell out on Christmas Eve.
I don't expect to be doing a lot this afternoon!Sacha should be on-call for her volunteer job, but she feels that the organisation is falling apart and she can't contact her coordinator.
We had a long talk about choices for our next car which we'll have to choose in April - and Sacha has agreed now not to rule out an electric car (our first choice is no longer available to us). I'll take that as a win.
I hope you aren't troubled by the wind -from whichever direction - or any other sort of weather, and are able to enjoy your day.
