Joan Armatrading - Show Some Emotion
It's hard to believe this album is nearly 50 years old. Joan Armatrading's music, very much her own, is timeless. This album contains perhaps her biggest hit, Willow.

I'd just seen him do two sets at the Great Western Express festival near Lincoln in May 1972. As I remember, I bought the album from the very young Virgin Records, when it was a cut price mail order company taking out full page ads in the Melody Maker and other music press.
It's a US pressing, and in remarkably good nick considering the almost constant playing it got from me as a 17 year old. -

In addition to the many fine albums issued in his name (not to mention his extensive session work), Ry Cooder wrote the soundtracks to several movies which were released as albums.
Crossroads is based on the legend surrounding blues musician, Robert Johnson.
Johnson, whose recording career spanned less than a year, nevertheless had enormous influence on the development of the blues.
According to the legend, Johnson, at the time a plantation worker, met the devil at a crossroads and entered into a Faustian plot to become a great blues player.
The title/opening track is a Johnson composition. -

Swordfishtrombones by Tom Waits
I was motivated to get this from Discogs by my ThursdayFiveList a couple of weeks ago.
I already had Rain Dogs and Frank's Wild Years, so this completes the "Frank" trilogy.
The album marks the beginning of Waits' move into more experimental music. I saw him on the supporting tour at The Dominion in London, when I was stood up by a girl I was rather keen on at the time.

Solid Air by John Martyn
Martyn had an unmistakable voice: mellow but challenging. His modern folk, heavily infused with jazz is timeless, and this, his 4th album from 1973 has him at his very best.
This is a 2013 repress from BackToBlack and is an excellent pressing. -
Why Dontcha - West, Bruce and Laing
One of the last of the heavy blues supergroups, comprising ex-Mountain Leslie West (guitar) and Corky Laing (drums) and ex-Cream Jack Bruce (bass), WBL looked great on paper, but never, to my mind anyway, fulfilled that promise.
This album illustrates that. There are one or two great tracks, but much is just a self-indulgent hotchpotch.
The band lasted two years before disbanding under the weight of hard drugs and egos. -

Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes - I Don't Want To Go Home
I've got most of the songs on this, Southside's debut album, on a live album and a compilation album. It's worth having, nonetheless, for the evocative description of the 70's Jersey Shore scene in the liner notes by none other than Bruce Springsteen.

Night Owl by Gerry Rafferty
Everyone* knows Baker Street**, and many know Stuck In The Middle With You, but beyond this, Gerry Rafferty is a sadly overlooked artist. He had a soft lilting voice, and wrote some wonderful songs.
This album is the follow up to City To City, which contained Baker Street.*Possibly an exaggeration
*Or at least Raphael Ravenscroft's sax solo -
Goldfrapp - Supernature
I'm not really one for coloured vinyl, but I must admit I'm taken with the translucent green of this 2020 pressing of Goldfrapp's 2005 classic. It sounds bloody good as well.

Willy DeVille - Miracle
Willy DeVille's first album after Mink DeVille bears the production touch of Mark Knopfler, but his voice and writing are as strong and soulful as in the six MdV albums.

The Steve Miller Band - Book of Dreams
Another from the late Mrs H's collection, I've not played this before. Steve Miller is perhaps best known (in the UK anyway) for his hit The Joker.
This is in a similar vein, inoffensive West Coast rock, a la The Eagles.
The sleeve is a bit battered, but after a clean the vinyl is in decent nick. -

Decent copies of this from 1967 are silly money, so I've picked up a 2022 pressing from BMG, and it's an absolute delight.

Tracy Chapman - self-titled
Whenever I play this album, I am struck by the power, both of her writing and of her voice.
She is best known for the first two tracks, Talkin' Bout A Revolution and, of course, Fast Car. But give Behind The Wall a listen (YT link in a reply) -
Top Priority - Rory Gallagher
Released #OnThisDay, 14th September 1979, Rory's label at the time, Chrysalis, promised to make promotion of this album their top priority after a successful American tour.
The albums title was his not so subtle reminder of this promise. -
Black And Blue - The Rolling Stones
Not one of their best, here the Stones attempt disco/funk, reggae, and other genres.
I'm pleased to have this, however. The first copy I bought online fell victim to Royal Mail dropping something heavy on it, and it arrived in 3 pieces.
The seller gave me full refund (I hope he is able to resolve matters with Royal Mail), and I was able to find another copy listed, without it's outer sleeve, and therefore very cheap.
I have paired copy 2 with the sleeve and inner of copy 1, and hey presto! -
Beggars Banquet - Rolling Stones
This album marks the beginning of the Stones' best creative period, coinciding with the introduction of producer Jimmy Miller, and the fading into the background of Brian Jones, who would die 8 months after its release.
The cover was originally intended to show a graffiti adorned toilet, which was rejected by the record company, although it was used on subsequent reissues. -
Taste - Live Taste
Recorded #OnThisDay 31st August 1969 at the Montreux Casino, Switzerland, by the time this album was released the following February, Taste had split.

Punk with a touch of mod (or is it the other way round?), it's hard to believe that Paul Weller was still only 18 when this, The Jam's debut album was released.

Stupidity - Dr. Feelgood
"Three alcoholics and a speed freak ... what could possibly go wrong?". Lemmy's pithy comment on the Feelgoods tells you a lot of what you need to know about the band. Founding members of the so-called "pub rock genre" and precursors of punk, their bare bones frenetic rhythm and blues influenced artists as diverse as Paul Weller, John Lydon and Suggs.
This was their most successful album, topping the albums chart for one week. Side 1 was recorded live at Sheffield Civic Hall in May 1975, and side 2 in November the same year on the band's home turf, at the Kursaal, Southend. -

Joan Armatrading and Pam Nestor met in 1969 when they were both part of the touring production of Hair. They formed a writing duo, and wrote over 100 songs together over the next 2 years.
However Cube Records, who released this album, wanted to promote Joan Armatrading as a solo artist, and although all the songs were written by them both, Pam Nestor is given minimal credit. -

Sticky Fingers - The Rolling Stones
Their first studio album after the death of Brian Jones, this is from, imo, the Stones' best period.
The cover features a working zip on a pair of jeans. The buckle on the jeans' belt is missing on my copy. -
The Pogues - Rum, Sodomy & the Lash
One of my regrets is never having seen The Pogues play live. There is enormous energy from their recorded work: live must have been something else.
Oh, and this must be one of the best album titles of all time. -
Syd Barrett -The Madcap Laughs
Produced, after he left Pink Floyd, with the help of people who seemed to have cared about him, this album has a similar feeling to Ummagumma, the Floyd album which came out about the same time.
By all accounts, Barrett lead a happy life after he fully quit the music industry in 1974. -
IDER - Late To The World
For a change, a recent release. IDER are Megan Markwick and Lily Somerville, and I first came across them when I heard their superb single, Attachment Theory. Intelligent lyrics, great melodies and wonderful harmonies, I'm very pleased to have picked up this, their third album.
