Giovanni #Morelli aka Ivan Lermolieff, a revolutionary #art historian, fighter for Italian independence and national unity & art collector and the nemesis of the German school of #arthistory, was also an inspiration for Arthur Conan Doyle in creating #SherlockHolmes and his methods. In this portrait by Lenbach from 1886, Morelli looks a lot like he could have been the inspiration for Professor Moriarty. (Morelli had studied medicine and natural history before going into art #connoisseurship).
