  1. Excerpts from #SalinasValleyNow story by Erik Chalhoub, "Más jóvenes se están sumando al ciclismo de montaña, y las oportunidades para hacerlo están creciendo a nivel local.” / "More young people are hopping onto mountain bikes—and the opportunities to do so are growing locally.”

“Riding bikes can increase focus, improve mood and improve both physical and mental health. It’s important to get kids to spend more time in nature.”

Asst coach with #Salinas High School Cowboys Mountain Bike Team, points to tight-knit community of #MountainBiking community, especially on display during #FortOrd race.

“It’s very supportive. Everybody cheers for everybody else.”

For kids who don’t have a bike, no problem—they’ll be given one for the race.

“It opens the door for kids who may not have a group, but they’ll find a group within the team.”

“They spoke so positively and energetically about being out there with friends in nature and away from screens.”

  2. Today’s bike ride followed an afternoon of #CalBike Policy Advisory Council meeting, then reviewing AB 2168 (ATP Reform) and SB 569 (Bike Lane Integrity), and other office tasks. Evening was garden work until dark. Outdoors is definitely our favorite place to be, no matter what we’re up to. (And yes, took our laptop outdoors for the meeting too.)

Thank you, dear earth, for renewing us without fail!

No town errands today, so our ride was simply in our rural area. We saw only one other person biking—a young man wearing a Salinas High School Cowboys Racing MTB team jersey. Had a nice chat, including about some spots where bIke lockers are needed. See some Cowboys history here: bikemonterey.org/category/chil.

  3. Official beige #introduction post after moving over here from mastodon.social. I doubt I'll regret it, but beigers haven't let me down yet.

I'm Isaac. WI-based (SE corner of the state). Grew up on the west-central side on a dairy farm in the #driftless. Probably a smart move to get away at the time, but days doing my job now make me realize Ayrshire and Jersey cows can be considerably better coworkers and aren't smoking the AI/LLM crack pipe.

Married to my best friend now for nearly 22 years. One son who knows way more than I do.

I work in tech trying to get anyone to care about system performance and capacity. Sadistic; I know. Just throw more hardware at it!!

Aside from paying the bills, I try to be outdoors as much as I can and have a horrible habit of learning new things and having numerous hobbies. Our family enjoys travel; and most of that is by pulling small camper all over and getting out hiking or riding bikes. 31k miles pulled in the last 7 years. More to come with a new rig this year. We have a lake for a back yard, so I do spend a fair bit of time fishing and taking photos of waterfowl and other #birds and anything else I can. #photography is a long-time hobby.

As someone who grew up dirt poor and outside a lot, yes, I hunt. Have record book whitetails on the walls and food in the freezers. Yes, I own guns. Yes, we need(ed) much better regulation of them yesterday. My son is a good competitive trap shooter and I enjoy that as well. Yup, lefties own guns :)

When late winter rolls around, my posts will probably become heavily #maplesyrup focused. It's a jobby that's growing year over year and I plan to make that a piece of my retirement whenever I get there.

I live for 2 wheeled vehicles propelled by pedals. Can't afford motocross bikes or the injuries anymore, but I enjoy #MTB a ton. I am a head coach for a #NICA team (6-12 graders) covering a handful of towns. #morekidsonbikes It's a blast and probably one of the most rewarding things I've done.

If I'm not outside, I'm probably in my shop making things with wood or steel. Although poor, I grew up with a torch and welder in my hands. I also fly rockets I design and build when time permits; some high power. Faster way to burn money than LLMs.

    If you're a non-fascist human; high-five. Let's have a beer sometime.

  5. " The city [of [Santa Cruz] hopes to have 30% of its population commuting by bike by 2035 and plans to incorporate e-bikes into this vision, but wants safety measures in place first.

O"ne proposed initiative is a school permit pilot program that would require students to complete a safety course to park their bikes on campus. The city's principal transportation planner, Claire Gallogly, said, 'It's going to involve in-person education for our middle school students, as well as on-bike training, in order to get a parking permit sticker to be able to ride an e-bike and park on campus.’”

  7. Joel Mendoza, North Monterey County Fire Chief, shared his favorite “game” growing up: Follow the Leader on BMX bicycles! 9. "Although even the commissioners shared some hesitation, they did vote to recommend [Carlsbad] city council still impose the minimum age requirement as a first step.

"They are also recommending council adopt a rule to prohibit passengers for anyone under 16 and look into lobbying the state to create even more protections surrounding e-bikes.”

  10. "No new E-Bike laws for now, Santa Cruz says education is the answer” by Briana Mathaw for #KION

"'Riding e-bikes, younger than they would get a license? They're really missing that opportunity to know how to behave on our roadways with other roadway users. And so [our focus is] enhancing the amount of education that we put out,' Claire Gallogly said.” (Gallogly, while not identified as such in KION story, is a City of Santa Cruz transportation planner, since 2015.)

  11. As the San Diego County, California’s City of Carlsbad "Snapshot of fines associated with violations” in carlsbadca.gov/departments/str notes, “The actual fine does not include approximately $300 dollars in additional court fees.”

Similarly true here in Monterey County. For example, while state law allows a $25 fine for Helmet Required [for minors], 21212(a) CVC, in actuality, if you’re under 18 and are cited for no helmet in Monterey County, you’re typically going to be out $193 due the court, not $25. That’s why Bicycling Monterey offers an alternative bikemonterey.org/bike-equity-p that is appreciated by local families: bikemonterey.org/youth-bike-an.

Donations to help support that project — or to provide helmets for youth without one — are needed and appreciated. How to donate: bikemonterey.org/about/financi

  13. @ascentale @kimu A7. For #eastbaykidicalmass rides, we pre-ride our routes to spot terrain hazards and sketchy intersections, train our volunteers on the specifics of corking the intersections and driveways along our route, and use radios to communicate with each other. We also debrief after each event to figure out what we can do better next time.

  14. The National Interscholastic #Cycling Association (#NICA) mission includes "improving the lives of #teens and positively impacting communities by providing a high-quality, safe and fun interscholastic #MountainBike program based on the principles of strong body, strong mind, strong character, equality, and inclusivity." There are regional chapters across the USA, from Alabama to Wisconsin. nationalmtb.org/nica-leagues/

The Northern #California (NorCal) League of NICA includes #Monterey County teams. Find those in Section 7 High School Cycling Teams of Bicycling Monterey's 35-section directory "Monterey County Bicycling Resources and Bike Community Leaders": bit.ly/BikeMRYDirectory
