Despite the red bricks, this church with the roof turret reminds me of #Herrnhut, #Kleinwelka and the other #Moravian places in Germany.

Last summer, while on sabbatical, I held Salome’s travel journal in my own hands at the #Moravian Archives in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. I also read a translation of the memoir read at her funeral from the #Moravian Archives in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.

After the death of her second husband, Salome taught in a girls’ school founded by the #Moravian Church in 1772. That school later became #SalemAcademy and #SalemCollege. Alumnae of those institutions re-created that journey in the fall of 2021, using a translation Salome’s travel journal, which she had written in German, and gathering in God’s Acre to honor her at the end.

With #balloons in the news, I was reminded of these 1855 newspaper items from the #Moravian town of Salem, North Carolina. Professor George Elliott did not feed a multitude of 5,000 but did entertain them with his 113th #balloon ascension. The Salem Brass Band played amid cheers as “the professor took his aerial flight” before landing about six miles away “at a Mr. Williard’s plantation” (i.e., farm).
