Morning Joe's DEI for gray-haired white men this morning (and I say this as a gray-haired white man): Deutsch (who opened the crypt and let him out?), Matthews (again?), VandeHei (in full kids-get-off-my-yard #MoralPanic), Barnicle (still?). Then Deutsch has the nerve to mock Biden's age.

"How “trans panic” took over the world" by Rowan Ellis.
In this video Rowan breaks down how moral panics are created, who benefits from them, and how we might be able to fight them! Including a breakdown of exactly how the trans moral panic of recent years began in the UK...

Free Speech Experts: Jonathan Haidt’s Moral Panic Is As Old As Democracy Itself

I had naively assumed when I wrote the first in this series that the YouTube videos in the Google News feed would be mostly from middle or centrist news outlets. That was wrong, so I wanted to see who was the most popular. I wish I hadn't. Then I read the comments section, and that went poorly, too.

Exactly, and link-pasting is exactly what I've done ever since I got on #Mastodon
#QuotePosting was an enormous #MoralPanic about four years ago because #Twitter had it and #Mastodon didn't and all the big techy-bro rags convinced #Gargron that he was discouraging new migrants from Twitter because Mastodon didn't have #QuotePosts
Took 'em about three years to do it, and everyone pretty much ignored quote posts when they were finally implemented, a lot because people could opt-out if they wanted and no one took them seriously
IMO, YMMV...

Human Problems: It’s Not Always The Technology’s Fault

I've been watching this on Github (as one does) because it's a replay of the very old #A11y #MoralPanic that hit #Mastodon right around the time I first got on -- and that has resurfaced regularly since
Now it's reached #Github
It's always cast in the same light, ultimately:
"You have to do what I want because *I'm* looking out for other people that you don't even care about so you're a poopy-head!!!""
It's grown (once again) to be extremely tedious
Current offering, by actually pulling the comment out into a text editor:

"I don't care about the weather. But I will only tolerate a mild overcast. Everything else is uncomftable and I should not have to accept it."
This is how some people talk about queer people. They say they don't care. But then they clearly care a lot, and act like absolute shits to even just the idea of anyone doing anything they personally wouldn't like to do.

Realizing I should probably add a slide about Population Bomb to my standard zoning history talk. It is around this time that downzoning as a tool for population control becomes standard practice in the United States. I’m not familiar with a source arguing for it explicitly yet but also I haven’t read Population Bomb. It may be right there. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Population_Bomb #zoning #MoralPanic #hunger #shortage #USHistory #inflation #SierraClub

The fact that Henry David Thoreau first introduced the term #brainrot to criticise the alleged tendency of his time to oversimplify complex issues shows once again the big influence of #moralpanic on public discourse.

I bought some frozen sticky rice wraps from Fairway Market; they're made in Vancouver. Made a quick vid about how I'm unapologetic about eating & using #MSG & how fears of it was based on #AntiAsian #AntiChinese #racism & not solid #FoodScience.
"If the science doesn’t support MSG as a dietary villain, why did so many people come to loathe and fear it? The answer lies not in biology, but in bias. The very name “Chinese Restaurant Syndrome” points to the misconception’s insidious core: it singled out Chinese cuisine (and by extension, Chinese people) as suspect. This framing tapped into old Western prejudices portraying Asian food as unhygienic, exotic, or untrustworthy. As Korean-American chef David Chang observes, avoidance of MSG became “a cultural construct” – essentially a socially accepted excuse to distrust foreign cooking under the guise of health concerns. In plainer terms, it was ignorance and xenophobia masquerading as wellness"
