MADEIN -- Nagomi

After a good deal of internal debate, I decided not to post MADEIN -- Super Obvious.

Although the song interests me for various reasons, I was mindful of the boycott a group of fans have announced following former member Gaeun telling of her being sexually assaulted by a senior executive at the agency.

The boycott seems to have been largely ineffectual, as the group seems to be getting decent figures on Spotify and YouTube. I don't know about their album sales, but I do know that they have a sizeable Japanese following who seem either unaware or just heedless of the calls for boycott.

I did think about posting a music show stage which maybe half a dozen people would watch and balanced the pleasure that post might provide me and one or two people here against the surely negligible benefit the post would provide for the bad actor at the agency.

But then I interrupted these utilitarian calculations by imagining what it would be like if Gaeun were sitting here with me. Wouldn't she feel hurt and betrayed if I pressed the post button?

So eventually I have decided not to post the video, but still feel frustrated all the same.

In addition, another part of me is thinking that my spending time and energy agonizing over a Kpop post on Mastodon is remiss in itself when I have all sorts of other and surely more important obligations to meet.

On the other hand....

The pictured member Nagomi was born in London. She left the city when she was three, but I think might still have family connections there. She admires Eunha, so that's a thumbs up from me, and she deserves another for looking so pretty here with her blonde bob.

It began with the office pool for the World Cup. I drew South Argentina. Who would’ve put that breakaway nation with a chance to win? Well, they did, and the prize, it turned out, was the prototype robot - Delta 764. Not fit for the market.

Everyone laughed as it marched in and announced, “You have won me, Steve.”

It was the beginning of a beautiful partnership. Delta was a fast learner, and its memory never failed, unlike mine. I used it to remember everything - work things first, of course, and it could programme as well as I could. But then it helped me remember friend’s birthdays, quotes from my favourite books, anything I needed. Quite the sidekick.

One weekend, I was tinkering with Delta, and I managed to upgrade its memory. I realised I could download my entire brain into it. It took 36 hours - didn’t do it all in one go, of course. Once I was downloaded, and made sure it was really me, I realised I no longer needed my biological body. Much less efficient.

So you see, your honour, I did not murder Steve McKay. I am Steve McKay. Just with a mechanical body, an electronic neural system and a quantum computer brain. Delta is no more.

Mike insisted on being on the cutting edge of sound systems, so when the surround sound headphone system was announced, he had to have one.

After listening to Dark Side of the Moon and Tales of Mystery and Imagination for twelve hours straight, he announced that it was the best sound reproduction he had ever experienced.

Unbeknownst to Mike, his co-worker Phil , who was sick of him going on about "tuned oxygen free cat 5 cables" to "ensure the purity of the digital signal", had set up the announcement of the new system. He had then hand built the unit Mike purchased for thirteen thousand dollars. He had made it from printed parts, and a $5 headphone set from the dime store. There was no surround sound system, just some random circuits that did nothing.

Now he had a hundred and eighty three orders for the things.

Two powerful World War II films now on Netflix

There are two outstanding movies about very divergent aspects of World War II currently available to watch on Netflix — Number 24 and The Six Triple Eight.

Number 24 is a Norwegian film that is both dubbed and subtitled in English, which painfully depicts the moral and ethical dilemmas that arise from warfare.  It follows the accounts of a highly decorated Norwegian resistance fighter (Gunnar Sønsteby) both during the war itself and many years later as he is describing his decisions and his unit’s actions to college students as a guest lecturer.

The film is extremely well done and will leave viewers examining their own inner quandaries of how they would have handled such situations in the fog of war. Without revealing too many details, the film is particularly poignant when his unit’s lethal actions against fellow Norwegians who collaborated with Germany are discussed with the students.

The Six Triple Eight is a triumphant film featuring an all-star cast, about the only black Women’s Army Corp (WAC) unit, the 6888, to be deployed to Europe during World War II. The extent of racism and bigotry directed towards these soldiers by their fellow Americans, including by their superior officers is simply appalling.

Kerry Washington is outstanding as the Major overseeing this unit as they train and then are deployed to resolve a seemingly unsolvable task with minimal help and limited time. Sadly, the film also reminds the viewer of how far the United States has yet to go to truly fulfill it’s  heralded promises to all Americans.

Both movies are highly recommended and neither is particularly long (under two hours each).

Question for anyone: would you feel able to correct a CIO if they suggested something that you feel wouldn't work?

Some background: I've been told face-to-face by the CIO that I should feel able to say to them that their ideas/demands won't work.

I'm comfortably 4 levels below them and my employer is a service provider to the CIO.

I categorically did not/do not feel anything like comfort when being asked to tell a CIO in front of their direct reports that what they were suggesting wouldn't work. Politically, I don't think that would work (side note:contract renewal discussions are ongoing).

Is this discomfort a me problem?
