The Caravan Of Forgotten Dreams (nèe The Flame Bringers) was.... bland? It has only elements that the previous stories had, very little new. It is very blatantly just Elric stopping the Mongol horde. Seeing the cat-lord was nice, but other then that.. meh

When he was Crown Prince and had the best alchemy labs and could have ANYTHING imported he spent a huge amount of time working on stimulant mixtures which would let him function normally, with limited success. He was able to function much better with the drugs he made, but he was still weak and sickly.
Why does he think now as a wanderer with less access to a lab and reagents he'll have significantly better success?

Which brings me to The Kings in Darkness, and let me say FUCK this story and everything about it.
It's plot is nothing special, be it has Elric instantly falling in love with and fucking a SEVENTEEN year old, Moonglum is back, it manages to hit so many racist and anti-disability tropes, and the ending doesn't even make sense. and the ending doesn't even make sense.

The Stealer of Souls is... not bad. It does a good job of showing Elric wandering, not really knowing what to do with himself so he's growing trouble for the sake of it. Stealing large amounts of treasure, and then abandoning it because he doesn't actually care for money, and leaving death (Even deaths which pain him) and chaos in his wake.
It introduces Moonglum however, which, bleh. He is such a nothing of a character so far.

While The Gods Laugh Is an excellent, mournful tail that I think holds up quite well, and our first demonstration of how weak Elric is without Stormbringer

Working my way through this Elric collection. Some of these stories I've read before, most I have not.
The Dreaming City is a good introduction to the character and Melniboné. Holds up quite well.

Yes, for the symbol of Law We have ↑, but there is no symbol in which eight arrows all point from a common origin, each at one of the cardinal or intercardinal compass directions.
The best we have is ☸ but it's not made of arrows, is too circley, and is already taken by some stupid supposedly """ancient""" religion.

It's been a very long time, but I think I've read most if not all of these stories before, but in their broken out forms (i.e. not as part of a "volume").
I happened to stumble across these on bookshop.org, and that was all it took.
I'm looking forward to diving back into the world of Melniboné and the Young Kingdoms at some point!

Michael #Moorcock hat mir mit Anfang 20 die Lust aufs Lesen neu beigebracht. Erfolgreich verlernt wurde es mir durch die Schule.
Seine Sage vom Ende der Zeit hat mich auf jeder einzelnen der 1004 Seiten mitfiebern lassen. Das komplette Königreich #Melniboné war vor meinem Inneren Auge lebendig, die Schwäche des #Elric spürbar.
Lord #Arioch ist sowohl einer der tollsten Antagonisten, als auch Helfer.
Rückblickend sicher nicht die feinst präparierte Erzählstruktur, aber das war mir wurscht. tbc -

Been reading a bunch of Elric of Melnibone series by Michael Moorcock. The magic system is very strange. Our hero has three kinds of ways to unnaturally increase his power:
1. Drugs concocted from various herbs, basically good old fashioned medicine.
2. Using his sword Stormbringer whose steel imprisons an ancient eldritch being capable of eating the souls of its victims and passing a morsel of that to its wielder.
3. Begging superior beings from other planes of existence for help, reminding them of ancient ancestral pacts or fealties.
There is no: "I cast a fireball into the darkness."
Only: "Fire elementals, I beg thee, cast a fireball into the darkness."
He does not have magical powers, just magical begging.

Finished reading Elric of Melniboné by Michael Moorcock. It was **so** fun.
The Melnibonians, of which our protagonist, Elric, is the emperor, are an ancient race of psychopathic fey-like men living on an Island - The Dragon Isle.
Their culture widely uses slavery and rape and torture and drugs (for slaves and masters) and dark eldritch magic.
But there is a twist! Elric is not a psychopath like the rest. He is therefore criticised for choosing not to employ many of the psychotically sadistic Melnibonian traditions in daily matters and in matters of military strategy, like a true Melnibonian, like one of his forefathers.
And the status and power of Melniboné is waning, it had been for centuries, and if it continues they might be utterly destroyed.
All of this makes for an interesting read.
Now to the second installment - The Sailor on the Seas of Fate.
Oh, and here is an amusing bit of fun - their head torturer, the thin tall man in charge of extracting secrets through bleeding flesh, is called Doctor Jest! How fun is that? Very!

Actually, a question for any #Moorcock scholars: is it truly considered canon that the events in “Weird of the White Wolf" occur chronologically after “Sailor on the Seas of Fate”?
If you must put every #Elric story on a narrative timeline, that's indeed the only order. But that also creates a jarring shift in Elric's motivations. He goes from “Travel and learn so I can rule my people wisely” to “Actually, my people suck, burn it all down" in between books for no satisfyingly apparent reason.

Latest read, Elric of Melnibone (1972) by Michael Moorcock; the first (full) book in the series about a chalk-skinned prince and how his morals plague him in an amoral empire, and how he is used as a pawn by a god of Chaos.
One of many re-reads. I'll never not love these books.
