It's because the stock market is not the collective wisdom of sober economic evaluation that it is hyped to be.
Someone - I forget who - described it memorably, and far more accurately, as "the stock market is a mood ring for how rich people feel about the economy that day".

I long ago gave up thinking it was the perfectly rational abstraction it sometimes plays on TV.
