That sounds like an excellent "rule of thumb". I didn't know if you were referring to 1,000, 10,000 or 50,00. Now I have a very good clue. I am very interested in working with #Moodle on low powered devices such as #MoodleBox, i.e. on the #RaspberryPi so that might give me a good platform to experiment.
I am not going to build that AI Visualisaion thing but I am very interesed in general performance issues.

I have tested a prompt from my #Moodle #AIText quetstion type on a Raspberry Pi5 with 16GB of ram and the Google Gemma4e2b model. it took around 30 seconds to the generate a response (see attached video).
I will now work on running it with #Moodlebox to test performance with the two running on the same machine.

I suspect that a large amount of #AI Inference will migrate to local hardware, AKA "edge". This Kickstarter project is offering offline #GPT120b inference.
Current price is around $USD 1,400 but that is likely to fall rapidly.
I can imagine adding this as a companion to #moodlebox, which is #Moodle on the #RaspberryPi once the price drops enough.
Alex Ziskind demonstrates it on this Youtube video.

Discovering the visionary #moodlebox project made me think that the #moodle project has really missed a trick by not properly supporting #sqlite as a database backend.
It would make tinkering with and hacking on the codebase so much easier, potentially expanding #opensource contributor numbers but also generating possible new use cases.

Fent provatures amb una Raspberri i MoodleBox per córrer un Moodle en aules sense accés a Internet (que sí... encara n'hi ha pel món...)
Si vas d'aula en aula (i totes sense Internet) pot ser un recurs molt interessant...
Si algú ja s'ho coneix, totes les experiències, idees i suggeriment seran benvingudes :P

“MathJax fonts do not load if loaded from local hosted instance, with Moodle 5 only”
This was an issue that would particularly affect #MoodleBox a custom distribution of #Moodle that is aimed at sites without an internet connection..
It was reported 4 days ago, it is now fixed. -

If you are a fan of #MoodleBox (#Moodle on the #RaspberryPi ). Voting for this issue on the Moodle 5 tracker for locally loading MathJax will help with allowing MoodleBox to upgrade to 5.

Thinking about our friends in Bern, who are behind the #Lernstick project, decided to try #MoodleBox to set up an offline-first learning environment. We can has Raspi shell! #datahackdaysuri

Introducing MoonPiLlama
Adam Jenkins has made a Youtube video showing how to install #MoodleBox and Ollama on a Raspberry Pi4. MoodleBox is a custom distribution of #Moodle specifically for the Raspberry Pi. However the Moodle part includes good information on generally how to get Ollama and Moodle to work together. It also includes gratuitous use of a yellow rubber duck
(Yes Pi 4 not Pi 5). -

I have been trying out the Raspberry Pi 4 hosting from Mythic Beasts
https://www.mythic-beasts.com/order/rpi/
My configuration is
#RaspberryPi 4 4x2GHz, 8GB RAM, 4T/month with 8GB Disk space and is £16.92 per month (cheaper per quarter or year).I installed #Moodle with #NginX and Mariadb and ran the Benchmark tool
https://moodle.org/plugins/report_benchmarkIt returned 474 points and with the disk as a bottleneck. Performance seemed acceptable for the trivial tasks I have done so far.

#MoodleBox is a custom version of #Moodle aimed at the #RaspberryPi and so suited for low resource situations. A common question is “what about performance”, or “how many students can be on it at once”. The project Maintainer Nicolas Martignoni has given a detailed response to a question about this here.
https://discuss.moodlebox.net/d/481-best-practices-for-optimizing-moodlebox-performance
I was particularly interested in the response about #WiFi

I have made a video clip running #ollama and the #sgemma:2b model on my 16GB #RaspberryPi which also has #MoodleBox, a custom version of the #Moodle Virtual Learning Environment running at the same time.

Nicolas Martignoni https://fosstodon.org/@nmartignoni@tooting.ch maintainer of the MoodleBox project (Moodle on a Raspberry Pi) https://fosstodon.org/@moodlebox@openedtech.social project has updated the report in the #MoodleBox repository to recognise the new 16GB model.
I will continue to explore any performance implications of the additional ram both for MoodleBox and associated #Moodle related software.

#Moodlebox on #RaspberryPi 5 16GB works
I swapped the 8GB board for the new 16GB board. I re-assembled and restarted with the same microSD card and it worked as expected. That is based on about 5 minutes of testing.

Who would pay $120 for a #RaspberryPi ?
Jeff Geerling asked this question on this Youtube video (thanks for the link @wisecat).
I suspect the extra RAM will be useful for #MoodleBox especially if running the #STACK question type along with the #Goemaxima back end. The #Moodle quiz engine on its own is quite resource hungry. Apparently the PI5 with 16GB I ordered today is already “in the post”. I consider Mr Geerling to be rather excellent. -
Just ordered a #RaspberryPI 16GB. The 16GB version was announced today, only 8GB was available previously. I will install #MoodleBox on it. MoodleBox is a customised #Moodle distribution specifically for the Raspberry PI.
-
For anyone intersted in running the #STACK #Moodle #question type on the #RaspberryPi
based #MoodleBox, I have added a wiki page to my repo which briefly explains what I did -
This animation shows a #Moodle quiz using the #STACK #Maths question type on a #MoodleBox . The #GoeMaxima back end is running under docker on the same machine which is a #RaspberryPi 5 with 8GB of ram.

#MoodleBox is a custom distribution of the #Moodle #VLE designed to work on the #RaspberryPi. I have it on a 8GB RaspberryPi 5 and the performance with me tinkering is very impressive.
Although it is “stock moodle” it has some system tools specific to the platform. One that recently delighted me was the check of undervoltage. I was running it from a standard USB source and it needs something more powerful for real world usage. It displayed this message.
