#MontStMichel listed as an HISTORIC MONUMENT in 1874 and 1897.
Although the monks regained possession of the abbey in 1867 and revived the pilgrimage, they had to abandon the abbey in 1886. Fortunately, the French government recognised Le Mont as an important Historic Monument. This allowed restoration work to begin, not just on the abbey but on the town, in order to keep its medieval appearance.
In 1897, the famous golden statue of Archangel Michael by Fremiet was installed. #history #France

Le Mont St Michel is just one and a half hours drive due west from my home in Bagnoles-de-l'Orne.
Basically, it is a granite tidal island in an L-shaped bay. It has a long and turbulent history and is covered in historic buildings and narrow winding alleys with LOTS of steep steps! Not for those with mobility problems or heart-conditions, although it is one of the most visited sites in France. More about its history later.

For #SchiffsSamstag here's the Brittany Ferries vessel, Mont St Michel, which sails a regular service between our home city of Portsmouth and Caen in the north of France. This was taken as she was heading to the UK while we were on our way out aboard a Virgin cruise ship in 2021.

While traveling, finally got a chance to see #MontStMichel.. Maybe the closest we have to Minas Tirith outside of Middle Earth? Only this place is on the coast of France, and sometimes high tides make it an island.

I am often asked how to get by #train to the popular #MontStMichel island in #Normandy. In 2020 a direct TER service from Paris to Pontorson was introduced, running from June to the beginning of September (reservation compulsory).
It runs on the non-electrified (and partly single track) lines via Argentan and Avranches to #Pontorson (shuttle bus service from there). Timetable for 2023 is now online, again the departure time in Paris will be about 1,5h later on weekends.
