Bill Evans, At The Montreux Jazz Festival, 1968 on Verve

Second 1968 Bill Evans performance I’ve posted this week, this one has the trio (again with Eddie Gomez and Jack DeJohnette) at Casino de Montreux in Switzerland, and was recorded by the technical department of Radio Suisse Romande.

My copy (via a private sale) is the 2020 Analogue Productions reissue on two 45rpm 200g records, cut by Matthew Lutthans at The Mastering Lab. Sounds fantastic, though I can’t say I like having to change the platter twice as often.

The Modern Jazz Quartet - The Montreux Years

Recordings of late-period MJQ concerts from Montreux, ranging from 1985-1993.

All very good, as you'd expect from these incredible pros, and well recorded, although imaging and relative instrument focus/balance can change track-to-track.

(Some of the sharper transients, especially on Blues in A Minor, clearly show the limitations of the Beogram 4000, as opposed to the Rega NAIA.)

Bought tickets for FKA twigs and The Black Keys at Montreux in July. We don’t get many big acts coming past this neck of the woods, but Montreux Jazz usually delivers.

Past experiences have been Massive Attack, Air, Alison Krauss and Robert Plant, Rufus Wainright, The Scissor Sisters.
