Eight new #gas and #OilWells have been approved for San Ardo.

"About 12 percent of Monterey County’s oil and gas wells are located within 200 feet of a river or creek. This includes the Salinas River, which runs through the San Ardo oil field, and is a critical source of the county’s groundwater.
"In December 2025, over 4,000 gallons of oil and toxic wastewater spilled in the San Ardo oil field, just over a mile from where the Sargent Creek feeds the Salinas River. It is unconfirmed whether that spill was connected to an active or idle well.”

In our Winter Bike Buzz, we mentioned a March 10 public hearing in Gonzales about the Vista Lucia Specific Plan, which includes bike trails and pedestrian promenade.
Laura Davis, deputy director and Michael DeLapa, executive director of Landwatch Monterey County wrote to #MontereyCountyNow readers about Vista Lucia on May 30.
"What doesn’t make sense in 2025 is that communities sacrifice their prime #agricultural lands for an outdated #housing model that isn’t solving the #HousingCrisis. "On Feb. 13, 2022, a similar incident occurred at Vistra’s Moss 100 facility, and this time, both #Vistra facilities were taken offline.
"Meanwhile, PG&E’s 182.5-megawatt Elkhorn facility came online in April 2022. Unlike both Vistra facilities, the Elkhorn’s batteries were not in buildings – they were in an array of 256 Tesla Megapacks on 33 concrete slabs.
In the early morning of Sept. 20 of that year, just over five months later, a fire broke out in one of #Tesla Megapacks at the facility, prompting the closure of Highway 1 and a shelter-in-place order for nearby residents. Though the fire only burned for six hours, the orders remained in effect until just before 7pm due to the risk of toxic smoke inhalation.”
