Na jednym ze zdjęć wrzucam porost - #Brodaczka właściwa - W Polsce jest to gatunek ściśle chroniony – nie wolno go zrywać, zbierać ani niszczyć. Jest też bardzo dobrym bioindikatorem – znika w miejscach o zanieczyszczonym powietrzu (wrażliwy na dwutlenek siarki i inne zanieczyszczenia przemysłowe). Tam, gdzie rośnie w dużej ilości, powietrze jest czyste.

WHAT IS GEOGRAPHY?
What comes to your mind when someone says the word “geography?” It definitely spans various interactions with Earth. It could be different people with diverse languages and cultures. It could be various beautiful features on the Earth’s surface, ranging from the highest mountains to the deepest valleys. You might as well imagine various places, ranging from cool resorts to underdeveloped villages, and everything in between, the list is inexhaustible.
Well, I’m here to tell you that whichever one your mind went to, you’re right. I have one word for Geography, WORLD. This is because geography is so broad. It encompasses every single thing we can think of, and yes, including other planets, and their interactions with earth. When we talk of geography, we are referring to plants animals, physical nonliving features, like oceans, mountains; people, places, and culture.
From this brief explanation, you must have guessed that Geography is simply the study of diverse places such as Ghana, Nigeria, and Canada; physical things like mountains, forests, and oceans; people of all races and cultures; and their interactions. Geography deals with interactions in the Ecosystems. It deals with how various living and nonliving things interact in their various ecosystems to maintain peace and balance on Earth. Geography is simply the study of the Earth’s surface, including its physical features, living things, and people, as well as the interactions between them. It is the study of where things are, why they are there, and how they interact with each other.
HISTORY
Ever wondered how this beautiful word, “Geography” came to be? It came from the ancient Greeks. In ancient times(and even now), the Greeks wrote different things, and used maps to help them understand their surroundings, and the world they lived in. In Greek, the word “geo” means “earth” and “graph” means “to write.” When you combine the two, you get Geography, which means “writing of the earth.” This explains that geography seeks to understand the earth and document what was found and understood.
PRESENT DAY
Geography was once centered on mapping and exploration of the earth. That is no longer the case today as the field has expanded, and ranges various disciplines. We can see geography in Biogeography: where we explore the relationship between biology and geography, and talk about the distribution of living things in different regions and places. For instance, the study of the geographical distribution of whales in the Atlantic Ocean. We can also see geography in other areas such as Physics, Astronomy, Agricultural Science, Economics, and history among others.
BRANCHES OF GEOGRAPHY
Despite this, Geography still has its subfields which include: physical geography, human geography, cartography, and Geographic Information Systems(GIS), among others. However, the three main subfields of geography are:
PHYSICAL GEOGRAPHY: The study of various physical features, patterns, and processes that shape the earth.
HUMAN GEOGRAPHY: The study of people, and the relationship between them and their physical environment.
REGIONAL GEOGRAPHY: The study of specific paces, such as cities, villages, and countries. It seeks to understand the human and physical characteristics of these places and their relationships.

WHY STUDY GEOGRAPHY?
Still confused about why you should be interested in geography? Still wondering about the usefulness of geography in our lives today? Here are a few of the many reasons why we need at least a basic understanding of geography.
1.
PRACTICABILITY
Geography is practical. It is a discipline that we see in every sphere of life. It is a discipline seen in our everyday lives. When we visit various fun places, we explore the “tourism” part of geography. When we are interacting with our neighbors, trying to understand them and their point of view on things, we are engaging in the “people and culture” aspect of geography. When we are traveling by land, air, water, and rail, we are in one way or the other, interacting with our physical environment, and the list goes on. Geography is a very important subject that we cannot do without, whether we like it or not. Each day, we are exploring different aspects of geography, knowingly or unknowingly. Its practicability not only enables us to see the world from different perspectives, appreciating its diversity and complexity; but also enables us to learn about the world around us every day, without the hassle of having to open our textbooks.
2.
PEOPLE AND CULTURE
Have you ever thought about other people and their various cultures? How do they live their lives, and why do they act the way they do? How did their various traditions come to be and why do they live by it? What does their food taste like, and why do they dance the way they do? How did various languages come to be? Why is their religion what it is? With geography, you’ll get in-depth answers to all these questions. Geography enables us to study the way of life of other people in various parts of the world, from the big cities to the tiny villages. This will enable us to build better communication and interpersonal relationship skills, enabling us to understand various people and their points of view. Geography also enables us to understand the history of various places, which shape those places and the people living in them; into what they are today.
3.
EXPOSURE
Are you someone who loves to learn bits and pieces of different disciplines? Then geography’s pretty much got you covered. Geography is an interdisciplinary and draws from many disciplines like; psychology, biology, agricultural science, history, and economics. With geography, you don’t just concentrate on one area, but widen your horizon and learn about so many different interesting aspects of life. It brings to your understanding, Ecology and Food chain in Biology, vegetation and soil in Agricultural science, Population and Trade in Economics, and planets in Astronomy; just to name a few. With Geography, you get to know certain aspects of so many disciplines, which helps you to better understand the world around you.
4.
PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT
Ever wondered how various physical processes like volcanic eruptions occur? Confused about how climate influences the physical features found in a place? Geography has the answers. With Geography, you’ll gain a deep understanding of the physical features and processes that shape our dear planet Earth. You’ll understand why and how various physical features and processes, like erosions, volcanic eruptions, and canyons occur. You will be able to understand the physical world around you and beyond. With geography, you’ll also be able to predict future changes and challenges in the physical environment and profer solutions.
Most people think that you have to be a doctor or be in the medical field to save lives, and since they believe, they want to save lives, they go into the medical field, even if they don’t like the program, but with geography, you’ll be doing what you love, and saving the world at the same time.
5.
NATURAL RESOURCES
With the help of geography, we can understand the importance of these physical things, like oceans, and mountains, and how we can harness them for our use. For instance, by understanding the climates of various regions of the world, we know the particular crops to plant in specific places. Also, the ocean serves as a means of transportation and entertainment for us; the list is inexhaustible. With a deep understanding of geography, we can effectively and efficiently harness these natural resources for our use; all while conserving the environment.

VITAL ISSUES
With the help of geography, we get to know about various challenges facing our dear planet such as climate change and global warming; environmental degradation; increased natural hazards like blizzards, hurricanes, earthquakes, etc. With geography, we will be able to not only know of these challenges, but gain a deep understanding of them, and proffer ways to solve the challenges and save Mother Earth.

CRITICAL THINKING AND CREATIVITY
Geography enables us to broaden our imaginations and expand our horizons. It enables us to think of ways of solving the issues and problems facing Mother Earth in this twenty-first century. With the help of geography, we will be able to not only think of solutions but to practicalize these solutions, and save our ever-changing planet.
INNOVATIONS
With the study of geography, we will be able to think of solutions to problems facing our planet, as well as implement these solutions. We will be able to bring new and modern technologies, and tools to the world, to not only make life better for people, but also to save the earth, and make it better, in general.
WHO NEEDS GEOGRAPHY?
A lot of people believe that Geography is meant for those who want to go into geography/geography-related fields, like geology, oceanography, earth science, history, and archeology. You might also think to yourself, I want to be a Computer scientist or a software engineer, so what business do I have with geography? But that is not the case. Geography is meant for everyone, as I had previously mentioned. No matter what profession you choose, there will be some element of geography involved. For instance, architects employ geography in their work when considering the climate of a place, natural resources, and topography, among others, in deciding what kind of structure to design. for a particular place.
As Geography may be highly needed for some people, depending on their future profession, like geologists, it might not be so for others. So, my simple answer to this question is that everybody needs geography. It’s the degree of need that varies. While some might greatly need it for their future profession, others might need it just to have a better understanding of the people around them, and the world in general.
WHO SHOULD STUDY GEOGRAPHY?
At the junior secondary(middle) school level, I advise everyone to study geography to get a better understanding of the world around them, and improve their communication and interpersonal relationship skills. However, at the senior secondary(high) school level, anyone interested in the subject can still offer it, but it is required for those interested in going into a geography/geography-related program in the university.
So, for those of you planning on going into a geography/geography-related field, like earth science, oceanography, atmospheric science, and geology, then I strongly advise you to take the geography subject in high school. This will not only boost your chances of getting into your desired program, as it shows your interest in that program, but will also help you to easily understand what your college professor is teaching, as you already have background information of the program to some extent.
For those of you already in/ about to enter college, you should study geography if you’re still confused about the particular aspect of geography to specialize in. By studying geography as an interdisciplinary, you’ll be able to make a choice, and then fully specialize at the master’s-level, if you choose to further your education. Also, even if you have a particular area of geography that you already want to specialize in, like Atmospheric Science, you can choose to study geography, and then specialize as you continue your education to the master’s-level.
However, this is completely optional, but I encourage this, as you might discover other parts of geography that interest you. You’ll also be giving yourself more options to choose from, to specialize as you further your studies, rather than just limiting yourself. However, if you’re fully certain about the area of geography that you want to go into, you can go ahead, then maybe choose electives from other areas of geography, or whatever else interests you.
Still confused on the area of study to go into? Not sure if geography or a geography-related program is the right choice for you? Don’t fret, simply go to the college you plan on applying to, and use their program discovery tool to discover the program you should go for. If the college you plan on applying to doesn’t have a program discovery tool, then you can simply go to the QS World Ranking website and use their program discovery tool. The tool asks you to choose your interests from a list of categories and then gives you programs relating to your chosen interests. You can also go to the QS World Ranking website to discover the perfect college for your desired program(s).
In conclusion, anyone passionate about exploring the world, and discovering it’s hidden treasures, from archeological sites to the sky and everything in between, should consider studying geography.
CAREER OPPORTUNITIES
Geography opens a lot of career doors. It opens a world to endless possibilities and opportunities. Geographers are needed in every sphere of life. From Governmental agencies to NGOs, Geographers can work anywhere. Their knowledge and skills are in high demand, from addressing the issue of climate change to improving urban planning. Even in Businesses, Geographers can help businesses identify new markets, understand their customers, and develop sustainable supply chains. With a degree in geography, and with or without further study(depending on the career), you can be a pilot, traveling and exploring the rich wonders of GIS and the atmosphere, a diver plunging deep into the ocean, a geoengineer creating the next deep sea, or space robot, an ecologist studying the population of a specie of planktons in the pacific ocean, a climatologist discovering how weather fronts and systems shape the climate of an area, an anthropogeographer studying the relationship between humans and their environment, a glaciologist exploring Antarctica and all it’s wonders, the list goes on.
With geography, you can reach beyond your boundaries and create your job opportunities, without waiting to be employed, by someone else
