It's weird to me this game ever left the zeitgeist with how unique it's mechanic is - put in any CD and it will generate a monster for you!
How is that not awesome??
Also, as unholy as it feels, the CD doesn't have to be a music CD... 😉

Also, did anyone else think the lyric was "play the game like *the name*, now we're in this place" not "play the game like *an ace*, now we're in this place?"

I’ve not played #MonsterRancher in a while.
I ran out of money after expanding my ranch and getting my monster lost on an expedition. So apparently that’s game over.
I reloaded my latest save, definitely playing it differently this time 😂

One of the coolest games I ever played was Monster Rancher on PS1. I still think the CD metadata monster acquisition system is a super unique twist on a game.

On PS1 this game and MR2 relied on CDs to give you new monsters when using the Shrine. But Switch has no disk reader, so the game has a search feature which then lists you options of ”CDs” to use.
The first one came off a random CD.
The second one is a combo of the first one and a combo of my first and second monsters.
The third one came from a Hanson collection CD 🤣 I’m training this one to see how well it does and then combining it with one of the previous ones.

I’m finally getting the hang of #MonsterRancher , I think.
I froze Dynomight when it was his time to retire, and I intend to do the same with Gilly Boi. Then I’m going to combine them to see what I can get.
Gilly Boi is more successful than Dynomight was. Usually Suezos gave me a tough time, at least in the followup game. This one I got to be loyal and gentle surprisingly easily.

If you ask me what my favorite game is I'll tell you, "Monster Rancher," each and every time. Still love it to this day.

So in Ultra Kaiju #MonsterRancher the only generation methods are NFC (minus amiibos which is weird) or typing in keywords. You can have a main keyword and a sub keyword.

Apparently, people miss being able to use CD data for Monster Rancher, so people have just been typing in bands and album names into the keyword lists, because Legend Cup has a database of monster results you can add to:

If you're an old school #MonsterRancher fan who is wary of spinoff/licensed games--don't be afraid of Ultra Kaiju Monster Rancher. Yes it has Ultraman kaiju in it but it is the most solid Monster Rancher game in years. If Monster Rancher 2 is your era of MR this is the game you're looking for. I was expecting so much less and got so much more.

Aside from Battle Card though, I have some... miscellaneous #MonsterRancher cards I don't have a lot of info for

First is the US #TCG, which I've never played but the card text alone makes me think it's awful

Then there's a second Japanese TCG that I got in a yahoo auction with some Battle Card stuff. Bandai made this one, but I couldn't find any Japanese pages with rules or anything. Would love to find out more about this

There's some assorted non-game trading cards that were also mixed in some auctions

Then there's the English cards that came with the toys, which I wish I still had the toys now. There was some sort of mini game you could play with these I think

Sorting #MonsterRancher Battle Card first since it's a fairly small collection. Well, by the standards of people outside of Japan it's a pretty big collection, there just aren't a ton of them

This game is a perfect mix of simple rules and fun strategy/deck building. Despite the cards never releasing in English, there's two fairly approachable ways to play it now: use the print and play English scanlation set by Ike Lawlet (I want to say he said it was about $40 to get an entire playset printed at some card printing site) or play either the Gameboy or PSX versions of Monster Rancher Battle Card, which did get English releases. I love the weird adventure element of the Gameboy version but the PSX version has more cards so either is good.

My favorite card I have is this promo tuxedo wearing Mocchi called Gentle, I believe this monster was in MR2 but could only be obtained without cheats in the Japanese version

I've been a tcg player for a long time, #Pokemon and a small amount of #Magic mostly, but I've also played a lot of weirder and weirder stuff. I was basically willing to try any game once and would dig old games up on eBay and at flea markets, as well as import stuff from Japan. Luckily I have a friend group who is also down for trying this stuff.

I have kind of fallen off TCGs in recent years mostly due to cost but I'm chatting with my friends about maybe checking out some of the lower key ones (aka not $800 deck games like the big three). I played a tiny amount of Digimon and loved it. I'm also wanting to import and translate that weird Daiso bug game they just announced.

Ultimately, the most fun TCGs I've ever played have been #Buddyfight (at least the first several sets, it went off the rails with time) and #MonsterRancher (Battle Card, there were multiple MR TCGs but Battle Card is the one that there were video games of, I've imported a lot of the physical cards, they're a pain to get for a decent price

Then of course there's #BassManiaX, my long delayed translation pet project, a one set Japanese fishing TCG from 2000. It's mostly that I now have to scan all the cards which will take forever. But I eventually want to upload it edited to English for print and play and Tabletop Simulator

The Switch version of the PS1 Monster Rancher 1 & 2 bundle is currently at 25% discount. I absolutely enjoyed those games growing up. If the discount reaches 50%, this would be an auto-buy for sure.
