BIG influx of new followers and readers over the last few days, so I just wanted to take a moment and say hi!
My publishing schedule is “as articles get done.” I’ve tried going daily-no-matter-what; it doesn’t work for me and the quality isn’t there, so I abandoned that plan. Still chatty and kinda prolific, just not daily.
Right now, I’ve got a couple of articles in progress that haven’t come together yet. One, honestly, may not come together at all. The other likely will, but might become two posts, or who even knows exactly, not me. (If I knew, it’d already be out lol)
Since this is secretly – by which I mean not at all secretly – a WordPress blog, it’s not really set up for follow-backs or anything like that, so don’t take offence that I don’t follow back here. It’s technical, not personal. (Yes, I know about the Friends plugin. No, I’m not using it that way. See below.)
My personal account is over at @moira and you will get a lot of short-form politics there, but also a lot of diy/maker noise (particularly but not just 3D printing) some fannish bullshit, a lot of biking (I maintain the largest-area detailed bike map in Cascadia) and most of all BRACE BRACE BRACE for weekly #monsterdon participation on Sunday nights because that’s how I roll*.
You’ll get some of that here, too, but in long form. This isn’t a strictly politics blog. It’s just that when your very existence is a political football, well, that’s how it falls out. Hopefully I’ll get back to other kinds of writing, too. (If you feel inclined, you might start with On Overcoming the Fear of Spiders, or maybe Once Upon a Time, There Was an Armourer and a Living Weapon if you like your violent political lesbian love stories extra fucked-up.)
I’m currently working on enabling this blog to be followed directly on BlueSky, via the Bridgy Fed gateway. It’s not working at the moment, but the Bridgy people think they might know what it is and have said they’ll fix what they found. Hopefully their fix will solve the problem.
I’ve also asked the Friends plugin people if they can fix it on their end but they haven’t responded yet.

An updated recipe for delicious bagels
I like to post progress notes and photos to Mastodon while doing my Sunday baking. It mostly ends up being about bagels, but not always – sometimes I’ll make baguettes or sweetbreads or something else entirely.
But mostly, it’s all about the #bagels. I post about bagels so regularly that people have started using my bagel posts as a warning that Monsterdon – the weekly monster-movie watch with live commentary – is incoming.
(#monsterdon is in fact a monster, trending Federation-wide each Sunday evening, starting shortly after my baking posts wrap up. It’s great. Follow #MonsterdonAlert for news and voting on which films to watch.)
Anyway, in response to my latest baking thread, MHowell asked me if I’d blogged about baking bagels, particularly for people who bake only occasionally. And the answer was… sort of? So I threw them a short post that linked my recipe.
But since it’s been a while – and I’ve learned some things – here’s a new, more comprehensive version of the bagel recipe! This version adds more dough variations, includes a couple of important process discoveries, and explains a bunch of steps left unexplained in the original.
It is a bit wordier, I’m afraid, but it is very complete, which should make it good for beginners and occasional bakers.
Unfortunately, that also keeps it from fitting onto a single page, so it’s RTF only this time. If you want a single-page version like last time, you’ll have to put together your own. (ETA: And even so, I didn’t have room to describe how to make your bagels nice and smooth and regular. So have a second post just for that.)
Of course, the more you do this, the less you’ll need the recipe – I barely reference it these days, and then only for ingredient weights. But if that’s you, you probably don’t need a recipe! At least, not more than once.
