South Tufa & Paoha Island, Mono Lake for #SaturdayScenery
This is Mono Lake in California's Eastern Sierra, with the South Tufa area and Paoha Island, in warm evening light after a summer thunderstorm. The dark spot on the left is Negit Island (both islands are of volcanic nature).

Unfortunately the back roads in to #DevilsPostpile and #Yosemite had yet to open for the season. I drove further north to revisit #MonoLake instead. This time I went along the northwest side and found a boardwalk trail over wetlands and down to the lake. There were a large number of #EaredGrebes...
"In the fall, almost the entire population of Eared Grebes flies to Mono Lake, California, or Great Salt Lake, Utah, to fatten up on brine shrimp and alkali flies before migrating farther south. Here they more than double their weight, and the sizes of their muscles and organs change. The pectoral (chest) muscles shrink to the point of flightlessness and the digestive organs grow significantly. Before departure for the wintering grounds, the process reverses; the digestive organs shrink back to about one-fourth their peak size, and the heart and pectoral muscles grow quickly to allow for flight."

Fresh thick snow is already wondrous enough, but add in freezing fog from the water, and it might be one of the most wintry vistas you'll ever lay eyes on. Captured during a recent epic winter at Mono Lake: "Winter Way".

Wilson's Phalaropes on #MonoLake
https://richard.mdpaths.com/travel/california/mono_lake/index.html
We were lucky to see a small flock of #WilsonsPhalarope since this is the extreme edge of there summer range. I'm not sure if they were nesting or just passing thru.
Wilson's is one of only two North American bird species where the female has *brighter* breeding plumage than the male. (The other is the Belted Kingfisher.)
"Unlike most birds where the female has the predominant role in caring for young, female phalaropes desert their mates once they’ve laid eggs. While the male raises the young by himself, the female looks for other males to mate with. This unusual mating system is called polyandry, and it’s reflected in the way the two sexes look, with the females more brightly colored than the males." https://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Wilsons_Phalarope

It doesn't get much more wintry than this. You don't just need the silent trees, you need the ice, the fog, and a fresh layer of snow. And on February 9, 2023 near Mono Lake, it all came together. Taken by yours truly on Route 395: "Winter Way".

“First Light — Tufa, Clouds, Mountains” — The first dawn light on Mono Lake tufa towers, with desert mountains and morning clouds in the distance.
The landscape of Mono Lake and Mono Basin seems reduced to essentials: rocks, mountains, water, sky, light. And all of this is in a place of uncommon quiet and immense space — it is difficult to truly comprehend the scale of the basin. These qualities seem especially strong if you come down from the peaks and intimate landscapes of the nearby Sierra Nevada…continues: https://gdanmitchell.com/2025/08/28/first-light-tufa-clouds-mountains/

“Tufa, Island, Distant Mountains” — Shoreline tufa formations, an island, and distant mountains, Mono Lake.
This view looks roughly north across the expanse of Mono Lake and Mono Basin. The foreground formations are tufa towers, exposed as the lake’s level dropped decades ago when Los Angeles began taking the water from feeder streams. The main body of the lake lies beyond the tufa. What appears to be the far shoreline is actually Paoha Island, a volcanic feature. In the far distance are desert mountains of the basin and range country.
I knew some history about the fights over Mono Lake’s water…continues: https://gdanmitchell.com/2025/08/04/tufa-island-distant-mountains/

Mono Lake and Tufa Towers” — A row of tufa towers at the shoreline of Mono Lake.
In early July I spent a few days in the Eastern Sierra Nevada, mostly photographing high country in and around the Tuolumne Meadows area of Yosemite National Park. Since I was camped just outside the park boundary and east of the crest, I managed to get down to the high desert country east of the range, too. In particular, I spent one morning photographing at Mono Lake…continues: https://gdanmitchell.com/2025/07/26/mono-lake-and-tufa-towers/

“Dawn Sky, Mono Basin” — Tufa towers in Mono Lake waters reflecting the dawn sky.
It is difficult to resist a visit to immense Mono Lake when I visit the Eastern Sierra, even when it isn’t the main goal of my trip. OK, it is actually just about impossible to resist making at least a quick stop. In early July I spent a few days around the Sierra crest along the eastern boundary of Yosemite National Park, and one morning I decided to head down to Mono Lake before dawn and spend a few hours photographing in the early light…continues: https://gdanmitchell.com/2025/07/23/dawn-sky-mono-basin/

Tufa Tower, Lake, Blue Mountains” — Mono Lake, a solitary tufa tower, and distant blue mountains in morning haze.
It is always a pleasure to visit the Mono Basin and its namesake lake, especially in the early morning when it is often still and quiet. I was there last week, dropping down one morning from a camp high up near the Sierra Crest. When I arrived I saw only one other car, and ts occupant was nowhere to be seen — it was as if I had the entire basin to myself!…continues: https://gdanmitchell.com/2025/07/07/tufa-tower-lake-blue-mountains/
