Flipping the kettle on with one hand, she opened the door with the other. Kate grinned at Ang, silhouetted in the gloaming light, the village's bio-luminescence lanterns were just starting to flicker into life all around, casting their yellow and green glows all along the paths. Kate's smile faltered as she noticed the second figure standing off to Ang's side. "Kenji," she said trying not to grimace, "What a surprise to see you here,"

"Don't worry Granny," Kenji growled "I don't make a habit of associating with hacks, but Ang insisted we need all the help we can get." Kate did her best to keep her composure, giving her head a small shake as if shooing off a bothersome fly and turned her attention back to Ang, searching her friend’s face, "What's happened?"

Wiping her brow for what seemed like the thousandth time, as Kate squinted down at the circuit board with it's mess of wires in front of her, soldering iron in hand, the arid smell of solder hanging the air. She muttered under her breath as the last light of the day faded from the small window above the workbench, "They should treat these consoles with more care. Do they think silicon grows on trees?" A meow of agreement emanated from her lap where her cat MingMing lay resting.

A sharp knock on her cart's door shattered the quiet. Granny whipped her head around, biting back a curse, as the edge of the hot iron grazed her finger in the momentary lapse of concentration. No matter, she'd apply a Knotroot herbal balm to it after seeing to whatever this was. "Coming! Coming!" she called out, maneuvering herself between the stacks of books, electronics bins of spare parts and wires, until reaching the door at the rear of the cart.

Glancing out the small door window, she smiled upon seeing it was Ang, the village spokesperson. Ang was one of the first to welcome her into village and gave her a chance to help out with repairs and other tasks. She owed her life to Ang. Over the years the two had grown closer and Ang was one of the few people she considered a close friend that could be trusted with anything.

Children excitedly whisper of old* Granny Segfault's arrival, knowing she'll have likely have a new 8-bit game for them to play, and of course to give scritches to her adorable traveling companion MingMing if they dare (rumors abound that it's actually her familiar and not a real cat).

*not that old, but the years of the AI-FOSS Wars did take their toll

If we're being honest the main reason I want solar panels efficient enough to power an electronic bike and trailer is so I can live out my #MonkAndRobot fantasy.

Where do you see yourself in five years?

Ideally, riding my bicycle drawn electronics repair cart full of ancient hardware chips, from before the AI-FOSS Wars. I help communities repair their tech in exchange for a room and meal at the local inn, swapping stories and learning from one another.

Reading Monk and Robot by Becky Chambers.

I'm a sucker for any story with "healing" in its genre description, but M&R lives in that special category of stories that *teach* me how to heal - to welcome back, examine, and give words to some of the thoughts, feelings, and desires I've learned to dismiss.

Also, it's queer cottage-core scifi so like, give it a read if that's your thing.

@jvschrag Personally, I think Becky Chambers highlighted crown shyness as a commentary on how nominally competing groups of living beings can and do self-limit their own growth for mutual benefit with other groups in an environment. People from the self-destructive period from which robots emerged lacked this norm and so suffered until they reigned in their capitalistic ways.

This aversion to ambition is reflected in the plain language of “being shy to wear a crown”. #MonkAndRobot

Okay, this is a little niche but I'm pretty excited that this UK podcast I follow, Past Present Future with David Runciman, is going to cover Becky Chambers' Monk and Robot books for their Thinking About Thinking Machines series!

I loved Chambers' style in those books and really enjoyed Runciman's talk with Dr. Shannon Vallor on Dick's Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep. Highly recommend.

On a vaguely related note, tonight I’ve been thinking about Becky Chambers Monk & Robot series and when or whether more books might be written about that lovely little world.

Solarpunk is such a wonderful sub-genre. I hope it thrives.

I want a prequel that explains how humanity created such an eco-friendly society. The little tidbits we have so far make me want to go live in that world and plant a garden. 🌱

Listening to A Prayer for the Crown-Shy (#audiobook versions of both books are wonderful). I just got to the part where Dex and Mosscap are heading to Dex's family's house and Dex is explaining their family, and I'm just melting with happiness at how normalized it all is. No spoilers. Just read it. :)

@ghosttownoli The Monk and Robots series is one of my favourite, and I also loved the Wayfarers series as well!
