Part 1 — The Land of Make Believe
Part one opens the dream world that Mrs Thatcher promised, and the ghosts that came back to disrupt it. When power begins to shift in society, everything becomes unstable, exciting and frightening. It wasn’t just the decline of political power, it was also a seismic shift in consciousness in Britain at the end of the 20th century, driven by individualism. #Monetarism #StephenHawking #BlackHoles #NF #Dubclashsoundsystem #Wankerontheline #Racistattacks #BucksFizz -
''North Sea oil and gas revenues surged just as what looked like a government-generated recession hit. Rather than being used to modernise British manufacturing, rebuild infrastructure, or create sovereign wealth for future generations, oil and gas revenues were channelled into funding mass unemployment, cutting taxes for the wealthy, .... Britain burned its future to fund the anti-socialist neoliberal project. "

Documentary Review: The Money Masters
This documentary is a bit on the controversial, but it is also a primer about monetarist economics---if this is something you want to learn.

🔴 **Late Wittgenstein’s money**
_“In particular, I first consider the inflation hypothesis as a derivative of the commodity theory of money and therefore inherently linked to a purely quantitative regime of monetary management. I then argue that, based on the hinge proposition that money is a creature of law, money’s value might instead be grasped and engaged on the basis of its political and qualitative dimensions.”_

Documentary Review: The Money Masters
This 1996 documentary provides some lessons on Modern Monetary Theory.
As well, there some commentary on how the financiers manipulate the economy. Conspiracy? Maybe, maybe not.

This thing has to be taught again and again to the next generation. It’s a postmodern folktale. That’s why I’m so happy to see Pissedmagistus doing it in tiktok & insta.
The rich are not rich because they’re exceptional. It’s you as the consumer who keep the rich afloat. And the less you own, and more you rent and borrow, the more profitable you are for them.

A good lesson on the basics of Monetary Money Theory. And how the central bankers might have shaped the outcome of wars.

"British economic history is studded with macroeconomic bungles..It is strange that Thatcher’s first two years, when she pursued her monetarist philosophy with the greatest determination, is generally missing from the list.
"As one academic put it, it was like “watching a man scalding to death in the bath and running in hotter and hotter water because the thermometer he was reading had the scale upside down”.

Documentary Review: The Money Masters
I struggle with understanding Modern Monetary Theory (MMT). This documentary helps explain it. It also gives some historical examples when MMT shaped the world--in a not so good way.

Documentary Review: The Money Masters
In 1996, William Still made a documentary about the workings of the central banks. He has enough stories to establish a pattern of nefarious thinking.

The Money Masters
This 1996 documentary gives us a few lessons to help us understand modern monetary theory (MMT).
Then William Still goes through historical examples of how MMT has been used to influence the world, usually not in a good way.
Here is my review of this documentary:

@greenpete @DrRGST #Thatcher reacted the wrong way into #monetarism and made things worse: https://social.sdf.org/@mjgardner/112245785714516770

@DrRGST @gwadej Please note that before anyone blames #Reagan, that graph started to diverge and get shaky in the *early* 1970s. The apotheosis of #Keynes’ #economics was 1971’s #Nixon Shock; after that a brief reactionary blip into #Friedman’s #monetarism as the decade ended.
We’ve been living with the worst of both worlds since the mid-80s as central planners try to ride herd on the #inflation of floating fiat currencies.
-
@dan613 I was 16 when I started studying #Economics and learnt about #Keynesianism - it immediately made sense to me - spend government money to invest to multiply the effect. It is a human response to economics.
This was at the height of Thatcherism and the new ideas about #monetarism and #mefirst so I realized then I may be a swimmer against the tide!
-
I feel the opposite. Reagan prioritized inflation-fighting over unemployment fighting, and since that was about when I was approaching working age, I will NEVER be able to forgive him for that. We need to kill #monetarism, which history has shown to be a #recession factory. -
CW: Long thread/4
Friedman's orthodoxy - #monetarism - has reigned supreme for decades, which is ironic, given that Friedman and his colleagues at the #ChicagoSchool of Economics claimed that they had elevated economics into an empirical, quantitative science, a kind of physics of human action, not like those squishy, #SocialSciences.
