  1. Aviators.

I was on my front porch and spotted this turkey #vulture (Cathartes aura) soaring high overhead and started to take some photos of it when by chance this #jet suddenly passed through the frame. I live under an approach flight path to IAH so jets often pass in the skies above - fortunately we are far enough away from IAH that the jets are still at a high enough altitude that we don’t get much noise.

  6. The #hummingbirds are back, or at least one of them, this male ruby-throated that came by last week and has been spotted a few times since. Hopefully we’ll be seeing more of them here as their annual #migration north proceeds.

  7. In my car at HEB (a large TX supermarket chain) waiting for curbside groceries pickup and in the row of empty, wheeled racks in front of me were several of these great-tailed #grackles - (AKA by me PLBs, Parking Lot Birds) serenading me with their unique raucous cacophony.

It has been a while since I’ve provided an Eastern Bluebird update. The family in our front box has what I’ll call teenagers. Pretty soon they will be grown up. Looks like all five babies survived and are doing well. 🥰

  9. By golly it has been fun having this family of Cooper’s Hawks in the neighborhood. I miss our song birds, but I’m saving gobs of money in bird feed. 🙃

I took this with my iPhone .

  10. #Mockingbirds don’t visit the backyard feeders, they prefer to hunt for live food, but they are always around. This is a parent with a freshly caught treat for its open-mouthed fledgling, which it proceeded to pass over to it a few seconds after this photo.

Here's a white-breasted nuthatch, from Lees Summit, Missouri in 2016.

These birds are great fun to watch as they can run up, AND DOWN tree trunks thanks to that long backwards-facing claw, called the hallux. They also tend to have a lot of personality.

On Saturday we ended up in far northern Missouri so we decided to swing by US Fish and Wildlife’s Loess Bluffs refuge.

Despite being bitterly cold, and all of the pools frozen over, there were still a few Bald Eagles looking for musk rats.

And I saw my first IRL Western Meadowlarks. They were so much bigger than I expected. And so many of them 😳

Didn’t have my cam, but some weren’t shy.. iPhone shot.
