Here we go: My colleague uses #Monal only with his private account and notifications seem to work well with that. No data point for the other server, sorry.

I asked also in the local #XMPP community MUC and got two hints:

1. The s2s connection betweeen the users server and the Monal developers push server must work. Maybe it's a good idea to monitor that connection?

2. The user must permit Monal push on #iOS. Sounds dumb, but seems to be a common error 🤷

IIRC, @Monal had issues with push notifications in the past, but they are fixed now?

My colleague has #Monal with both a private and a work account. The former is a public server running #ejabberd, the latter #prosody on company server. I'll ask, if they gets reliable push notifications from both.

Some friends use #Monal and they send me photos and voice messages (unfortunately). Things do work for them. I can't ask, what they do differently, because they are completely non-technical users. They don't even know, what #Jabber or #XMPP were. I.e. you encountered a problem, that is not that common. And instead of asking in the Monal groupchat or @Monal you prefer public ranting 🤷

I use #Jabber/#XMPP since ≈ 2014. Works for me, for my friends, family, colleagues. Some (few) of them are on iOS and use @Monal successfully. Maybe they're holding it wrong? 😉

But seriously, instead of using an LLM, I'ld ask in the #Monal chat room:

xmpp:[email protected]?join

A former #xmpp user came to me today looking for help. They needed to send a video from their #iphone to someone but he forgot the password from their gooledrive.

A quarter of 21th century is gone and users still have problems sharing their files.

Okay, I said, let's try #xmpp. You did not delete #Monal, did you? - No, I didn't, they said. I quickly brought up the container with #prosody and checked upload from #conversations_im It worked. Okay, try it I said. They tried. Nothing happened.

@prav was rejected by #Apple from app store saying it is similar to #Quicksy and #Monal. So we are exploring our options to make Prav available to iPhone users. Ideas and help welcome.

We are also looking at #aptoid and also filing a complaint with Competition Commission. Why should we allow Apple to gatekeep apps on iPhone?

@daniel danke für deine Arbeit und deinen Einsatz. Ich nutze #Conversations auch schon ewig (neben #gajim auf dem Rechner). #xmpp Messenger Clients wie diese sind in der gesamten Familie und im Freundeskreis im Einsatz. Auch danke für das Wechselrezept. Gerade was die Unterstützung für iOS angeht kannte ich #monal noch gar nicht.
Und für Leute die xmpp lieber ganz einfach per Telefonnr. nutzen wollen ist auch #quicksy eine super Lösung. Ich glaube einfach vielen ist auch gar nicht klar das quicksy und conversations eben EU Lösungen bzw. sogar deutsche Lösungen sind.

Was #signal angeht muss ich eben auch sagen, das mich der fehlende föderale Ansatz stört. Und genau da habert es eben m.E. auch an der Sicherheit, die dort immer hochgehalten wird. Informationssicherheit muss eben auch die Verfügbarkeit abdecken, die man bei einem zentralen Dienst durchaus kritisieren darf und auch muss. Auch ist man so der Produktpolitik des zentralen Anbieters ausgeliefert. Aktuell handelt Signal im Sinne von Vielen und stellt eben die bessere Alternative zu WA dar. Aber bleibt das auch so für alle Zukunft? Wenn nicht sitzt man halt im nächsten goldenen Käfig.
