Blue jays and cardinals sometimes go through an annual molt like this. You can utilize this comic to think about other normal body experiences that society thinks is taboo. Talking about periods is a common example.

The cardinals coming to our feeder are all molting. The females remain on the ground and are the color of the sparrows. Just as any strategy based on the correction of clinical signs of #shock (#tachycardia, #hypotension, encephalopathy, #oliguria, crt, #molting, cutaneous temperature or lactate). This are signs of a syndrome, none of them is nor sensitive nor specific alone.

I always like it when birds look distinguishable, have odd markings or behavior that I recognize. This Red-winged Blackbird seems to be growing new wings on his shoulders, and I think it looks really cool and dramatic how the sheaths are slowly turning into real feathers. He did like to present himself properly, too.
