Molly Knox Ostertag has made a wonderful coming of age story set here in Nova Scotia and brimming with heart. This comic captures the sweetness of first romance and packs in secrets, ecological concern, and a warm cast of characters. Ostertag’s art has delighted me since her work on Strong Female Protagonist, and it’s in fine form here, filling the page with tender illustrations of life on and near Wilneff Island.

Description
Fifteen-year-old Morgan has a secret: She can’t wait to escape the perfect little island where she lives. She’s desperate to finish high school and escape her sad divorced mom, her volatile little brother, and worst of all, her great group of friends…who don’t understand Morgan at all. Because really, Morgan’s biggest secret is that she has a lot of secrets, including the one about wanting to kiss another girl.Then one night, Morgan is saved from drowning by a mysterious girl named Keltie. The two become friends and suddenly life on the island doesn’t seem so stifling anymore. But Keltie has some secrets of her own. And as the girls start to fall in love, everything they’re each trying to hide will find its way to the surface…whether Morgan is ready or not.

#TheGirlFromTheSea, by #MollyKnoxOstertag, is a short & sweet coming of age romance between two girls - Morgan and Keltie.
Morgan is struggling to come to terms with changes in her life, and trying to hide a secret from her family & friends, while Keltie is a fish out of water with secrets of her own.
The characters are core to the book, & they are both incredibly sweet & relatable.
The plot is really all about their relationship & complications from it, though there -is- another story (1/2)
