TIL about #mojibake, the garbled or gibberish text that is the result of text being decoded using an unintended character encoding. Its something we’ve all seen but I didn’t know there was a word for it. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mojibake

I found an interesting bug! It's in either iTerm/Terminal.app or in Finder.app

Some hungarian got encoded in non-utf8 and it's now interpreted incorrectly ending up with #mojibake, but the console and the file browser render it differently :)

Notice how the "snake" character ("Gaf" in persian script, I think) moves from left to right.

Gerade mal wieder über einen Fall von @schei_encoding bzw. #Mojibake gestolpert. Das in einem Online-Shop bei einem einzelnen Produkt (und anderen nicht) zu sehen, ist dann schon recht peinlich.

Ein Klassiker nebenbei: UTF-8 als ISO-Latin-1 (oder -15) interpretiert.

A #mojibake #puzzle: In place of "Ä" (U+00C4), there's "«" (U+00AB). The text should be "PITÄJÄNMÄKI". Which encodings or other glitches (e.g. a lowercase-to-uppercase conversion gone wrong) were involved? (I don't have the solution.)

It arrived albeit #FedEx fucked up all #umlauts in my shipping address, even in two different ways:

Once they obviously took #UTF8 as #ISOLatin and once they seem to have taken one #8bit charset as another 8-bit charset, probably #ISOLatin1 as #CP850. 🙄 #schei_encoding #mojibake

@Venty once described systems that have such issues as #UmlautlyChallenged. 😉

But at least it arrived! I heard from a keyboard dealer that they stopped sending parcels to Europe with FedEx due to too much packet loss…

In #cygwin’s #mintty (wahrscheinlich auch in anderen Shells?) kann man das #Encoding explizit einstellen.
Dan schickt man per #echo text in ein #fifo #namedPipe und liest es mit dem anderen encoding mit cat aus.
