  1. When we talk about replacing car trips with bicycle trips people often think of commutes to work and that has been the focus of the state government because people riding bicycles to work means less peak hour traffic.

But the low hanging fruit for mode shift to bicycles is in trips in the 0-2km range. These are distances that a lot of people will just walk, but a huge number of people are still driving and very few people are riding bicycles.

They're distances that are often awkward and slow to use public transport for but are only a few minutes on a bicycle.

There is surprisingly less investment in enabling these kinds of trips by bicycle and they're often the trips where the existing infrastructure fails you the most even though the infrastructure for these trips is the cheapest to deliver.

The new big green Veloway is expensive infrastructure that is targeting trips in the 5-10km range but you can see that there are relatively few of those kinds of trips.

  2. @brenttoderian.bsky.social excellent thread, thanks for reposting.

And very timely as many US transit systems (definitely the systems in the SF Bay area) are facing immense financial challenges - yet an easy to use, reliable, low-headway transit is a required alternative

    #modeshift NOW!

  3. I keep thinking that #sfmuni should look at how to reduce travel times on key routes. I first saw how the Chicago L had a skip-stop strategy ( an A and a B train that shared a stop every few stations) and how it reduced travel times. Now I read about #Superloop buses to reduce travel times, to great acclaim, it appears.

Can SF learn from these examples? It's essential to greater mode shift.

  6. Inspired by @BostonBikeData - here’s a chart of Provincetown commute modes over the 10 year period that the Census tracks in their American Community Survey. Work from home was going up even before the pandemic… #BikeTooter #commute #modeshare #modeshift #Provincetown #CapeCod #bicycling
