A little MJQ earlier this morning. Before I swapped in a new stylus. The second track on the B side “Home” has an awesome groove. Reminds me of Lee Morgan’s Sidewinder. And Bag’s Groove as the final track with the back and forth left and right channel between the piano and vibraphone is a crowd pleaser.

John Lewis & Sacha Distel - Afternoon in Paris
MJQ - Bags + Distel (Guitar) & Wilen (Sax), basically, playing a fun group of tunes. A little weird to have most of MJQ playing Bags' Groove without the titular vibes player, but it works anyway.
Pristine Sam Records repress in the original style. Pallas did a great job…

This is a rare album, only issued in Japan, and only in mono (as it was recorded), 10 years after it was recorded. (Four tracks appear in the MJQ: 40 Years CD box set.)

The Heath Brothers - Paris 76
Percy Heath from the Modern Jazz Quartet formed this group after the MJQ played it's "last concert" a few years earlier. (Of course, the MJQ got back together.)
Anyway - this was recently released on SAM records in a limited edition of 3000 and it’s...great.

Van Morrison - Astral Weeks
After listening to the Modern Jazz Quartet the other day, and finding out that Connie Kay played drums on this, its jazziness (and that of a lot of Van's early work) locked in even stronger.
It's a beautiful record. And this run - Weeks / Moondance / His Band / Tupelo Honey...geez.
