On Dis-community – Play on Words
Reading Time: 4 minutesYesterday, spontaneously I joined a group for a ride to the Tour de France Femme via Strava. The day before that I meant one group via Meetup for a bike ride from Geneva, and a second via Strava for a run. The meetup group, to the best of my knowledge has no strava group.
Every single other group I know does and I find this intolerably frustrating but let’s focus on the positive first. The positive is that I had no runs for the first time in weeks, so I decided to revert to the cycling staple. In so doing I had a pleasant, quiet morning ride to Geneva with barely any cars, before having a group ride to Crans.
When I got to Arnex-sur-Nyon I saw someone from the second group riding to Geneva so I joined him. In the process I then went for a second more physical ride. In the end I got exhausted, went home, and then rested.
Yesterday morning I was thinking “I should go and see the Tour de France because it is a rare opportunity but I wasn’t sure whether to cycle a tiny distance or whether to go further. I noticed on Strava that a group was planning to go to the TDFF event above Mont-sur-Rolle so I joined them for a social ride, and then a social wait for the TDFF to pass, and then the social ride home.
Some people went up Le Molard on the route home but I had already done a lot of climbing on Saturday so I rode for home. I helped guide two people along quieter roads for the route back, instead of going along the main road.
Last night I joined the Whatsapp group but I haven’t posted to the group because of how particular people have become about “chatter” on conversation on an instant messaging platform.
The conflict actually comes from a second source. I am in a running group associated with a shop. We’re going to do a run in Octobre and I saw an article that is topically relevant to the run. An admin deleted the message and then started …typing… and then “so that people can easily find “blah blah blah please refrain from chatter” and this angers me.
It angers me for three reaasons.
The first reason is that I shared a link to a Swiss television news item about the history of a run they are an official sponsor of, so it adds weight to the run. For people like me, that historical context is a selling point.
Specifically “92ème Course Morat-Fribourg
The article
I didn’t share it for noise. I shared it because it is directly connected to the premise and historical context of the run. I didn’t include a hyperlink to avoid being too noisy.
It angers me that the post would be deleted and then someone would write “avoid being chatty” because this is directly relevant to the run, and the group. For me, community is as much about chatter in person, at events, as online between events. If you don’t want chatter, don’t use Whatsapp.
What gets to me is that the person is an admin, rather than part of that direct community. This is a bureaucrat behaving like a Caligula rather than a proper moderator.
Netiquette is about minimal intervention by group moderators, but in the modern era group moderation is strict. So strict that there is little value in being in these groups. I get all of this information directly from Strava.
For me, Whatsapp is a community tool, for conversations related to running events, and running life. They are about social cohesion and a healthy sense of persistent community.
When someone shares an article related to the history that is directly relevant to an event it is a key sponsor of, it undermines and destroys the sense of community because it discourages social sharing.
I quit the chat because two people “hearted” the censorship comment and I’m using Facebook despite it being owned by Facebook. For me that demonstration of dis-community is why it makes sense to quit the chat.
During various runs I took pictures, which were then used to illustrate events. Through heavy handed censorship they have lost my free photo contributions.
In the end I thought that because we’re doing a run along a historical route, and that the Swiss national broadcaster decided to write and shoot an item, that it was warranted to share it in the group. Now I see that I was wrong, and that the group is too narrow in scope even for an interesting historical insight not to be deleted and treated as noise.
For me, a good community is strong in person, and active online. It is receptive to information relevant to the context of group activities and “noisy” posts are deleted if the volume rises.
It was one post. No hyperlink, no extrenuous chatter, and it was offered within the clear and evident context of the run we’re doing as a group. I have left the Whatsapp group. The next step may come soon.

"This profile or server has been hidden by the moderators of mastodon.social."
Saw this message more often lately - but to be expected with war going on maybe.
But also before I was posting about COVID videos and in my appeal they / moderators didn't even give me a human reasoned reply. Just that my #appeal and links to evidence failed.
I saw that as human failure / #unfair itself. If they are forced to follow government #guidelines I'd like know that clearly.

Just a reminder that if you're an admin or a moderator, it should be your responsibility to step in when someone is harassing a member of your community and claiming to be enforcing rules that don't apply to them.

@ApostateEnglishman
There are #moderators on the fedi doing a great job in keeping the #fedi vibrant and non-toxic. Dog knows it’s not an easy job.
For the record, I’m not anti AI, just anti #AISlop. In any discussions on this topic it is important to distinguish between the ‘text vaccum/regurgitators’ and trained statistical-engines and pattern-matching AI applications designed to bring a helping hand to humans doing their professional best while respecting data provenance conventions & privacy (not an expert here so words are missing to describe the differences which matter to me — I’m a great fan of what Cory Doctorow @pluralistic has to say on this subject).Aside from that, I’ll keep preaching… thank you for your toot.

Denver Post: One Reddit user ousted, and a ‘reign’ over a Louisville online community ends. “In the Louisville subreddit, some users said the former moderator had used the group in an attempt to push a political message, with one saying they are ‘a libertarian who didn’t even live in Louisville and had taken over several small town subs.'”

X-Twitter I was surprised however and simply cannot understand, besides the privacy-issue, why so many people on the Fediverse have an issue with it. There's level-headed, centre discourse and posts from business leaders, something definitely missing in the Fediverse; the moderators do not appear to interfere with people defending themselves against sexism and misandry - which is a huge problem with the often biased moderators in the Fediverse.

CW: Swearing
Last week I had to babysit the social media accounts from my employer.
Instagram and Facebook are an absolute nightmare and mindf*ck and I don't envy our social media manager.

CW: [Digital Volunteers needed]
Dear #fediverse,
We have created this account to support in sharing #mutualaid requests from #Palestine.
The team has unfortunately not been able to keep up with the needs of the times - so we are looking for:
#moderators , #admins or #volunteers to help manage this account
we are looking for someone who can:
- accept new followers and reshare mutual aid requests from #Gaza and #WestBankwe dont have a roadmap for what this account could look like, but you are free to think about this account and suggest ways in which we can further help together
this account was created after a similar one was #blocked and removed off of instagram, but we cant manage it alone anymore, since the original team has no capacity to manage this account
we mostly wanted to share aid iniciatives but since many people from Gaza are joining #mastodon it would be great that this account can support at least in sharing #chuffed and other links to aid requests from Gaza
- please feel free to comment in this post or send us a DM if you believe you would be up to the task of managing this account together with other #volunteers.
we are sorry if this is not enough, or if it's not the ideal way to help Gaza, but it's what we have been able to do so far.
thank you,
#FreePalestine from the genocidal zionist occupation!

The #Fediverse is such a wonderful place, but it's sad to hear it's really under threat, as #moderators face #burnout
"Decentralised platforms pride themselves on being community-led and member-directed. But community care requires people. And right now, those people are overwhelmed.
"If we want the social web to remain open, resilient, and safe for marginalised users, we need to support the humans at its core."
Great work all of you & #IFTAS thank you

@alice
Speaking on behalf of what I can pretty much assume is all #moderators on Mainstream Fedi...If you see someone posting someone else's nudes, and there is clear non-consent, please use the report button and give us anh evidence you have.
Never assume we don't have the time, as it is literally moderation's job to look through and respond to posts which may violate rules. TBH, stopping stuff like revenge porn is one of our higher priorities, and while I haven't seen anyone do that particular offense here, if someone did, it would not be the first time I have sent a dump of all our information on someone to the police. (Note that we only do that for serious crimes like selling CSAM stolen data, and revenge porn is illegal in a lot of jurisdictions)
That said, TechHub is one of a few servers where posting porn in general is not allowed (we're literally "Safe to look at in the Office"), so I don't think we'd even need evidence to ban.
Either way, when in doubt, just report.

#bluesky's approach to #moderation:
"fuck that job, you do it... uh, freedom!"
voila:
but then they police *that*
so in the end it's a trick to keep the hamsters running on the wheel of "bluesky is #decentralized and free!"
nope
#corporate #socialMedia doesn't like moderation
1. it's a cost center: you need to pay #moderators
2. it squelches #bigots and #trolls
but they mean outrage -> eyeballs and clicks -> engagement, their bread and butter
-
@reflex @mastodonmigration @janisf @bitsnpieces
let's say we have a #serverPact:
"we moderate on rules, strictly"
posters know they won't befall the spanish inquisition in a nice subset of the #fediverse
but
it moves the #drama from individuals to #moderators, it doesn't kill the drama
well, ok
as long as posters are happy
so, the new drama:
server pacts having heated, turbulent schisms
again: fine
as long as the capricious suspensions go away
just pick the right server pact
