@llamasoft_ox I had the "tenkeyless" version of this, the Model M Space Saver, for a while but they keys were juuuust a little sticky sometimes in their action, so I sold it back to eBay whence it came. Was lovely, tho.

"What would happen if you took the classic layout and look of the #ModelM and rebuilt it with modern mechanical guts? #VortexKeyboards decided to find out and the result is a unique keyboard with one foot in two different decades." https://reviews.ofb.biz/sa1337

Anyone got a newer unicomp "Mini M" (tenkeyless/space saver) board than mine? Wondering if they're still just sawing down full-size barrel plates and leaving one side of the plate exposed/opened.
(The serial number on mine is 0001034, from 7 June 2021)
I don't think it's gonna be a problem, I just still find it somewhat amusing that unicomp did that. I'd kind of suspected they would.

Turns out that IBM Model M is a Silver Label and is quite in demand... who knew (lots of people except me!).
I stripped it and cleaned it. Thinking about getting a Model M to USB conversion board for it.

His/Hers desk setup in 2017. My laptop was a ThinkPad X250 running OpenBSD, attached to a 2560x1440 Dell monitor. Hers was a 2016 Rose Gold MacBook Retina running whatever macOS, and a Mac mini 2012 attached to the same model monitor. This was our townhouse in Ecuador. The keyboard is a Model M SSK from 1997. Apparently Greg Fishel was on TV. #thinkpad #openbsd #macbook #modelm #desksetup #battlestations #battlestation #battletop #screenshotsunday

My next big wiki page revision is coming along nicely! #Unicomp, the 'torchbearers' of #bucklingspring #IBMModelM #ModelM keyboards, deserves a good, informative, factual page as well! Aiming for a release potentially as early as a few days, maybe a week?

I have been dreaming of purchasing this particular keyboard for a long time. Since the beginning of 2020, I wrote to the mail of the company that produces this keyboard for the purpose of delivery from America to Russia. Only after 4 years I finally succeeded 🥹

Holy crap, I think I'm in love! Earlier this week I had a somewhat disappointing experience with the #ModelM #keyboard, and after repeatedly being encouraged to try out a smaller form factor than the #tkl or #tenkeyless (no numeric keypad), I decided to use my lunch break to visit the local gear shop. It's located way to close to my place of work, which in itself is a curse. Anyway, I was jonesing for a small keyboard, possibly wireless as well, that would fit in my work bag and perhaps be programmable. I've been looking at #Keychron keyboards a couple of times, but so far I've only had a #DasKeyboard TKL 4C and a #Vamilo va88m. Those, unfortunately, are not programmable in any way. I was unsure to get smooth red switches or brown tactile ones, but this is what I ended up with: the Keychron K6 Pro with prelubed Keychron K Pro Mechanical Brown switches, and by Cthulhu's tentacle beard, this keyboard is beyond delicious. More in thread.

My New #ModelM #keyboard from #Unicomp came a couple of days ago. While it does offer a delightful flashback to the early 90s, it took me just over an hour to realize that it probably isn't for me. Why? While it does have a lovely click, it rattles. A lot. It doesn't have any media keys. It's not programmable (since it's shipped with the old Ruffian controller). The Danish layout comes with the Win key just right of Space, which is weird (we usually have AltGr there). Also, coming from TKL keyboards, I think I've realized that going back to a full sized keyboard probably wasn't the greatest idea.
In short, if you're looking for an absolute unit of a keyboard that's conservative and noisy, this is probably right up your alley. I used to love them.
Poke me if you're looking for reasonably priced one with a Danish layout ;-)

I just ordered the New Model M keyboard from #Unicomp Inc. a couple of day ago, but now I'm thinking I may have jumped the gun. People in the know are saying that the original #IBM Model Ms were developed to cut down on cost compared to the previous #ModelF keyboards. Corners were cut - everything from changing the frame from metal to plastic and simplifying the buckling spring mechanics of the keys, sacrificing durability and losing the "right click sound". Unicomp is churning out Ms on an old production line they took over from #Lexmark and keeping units at around $125. At the other end of the scale, Joe Strandberg of #ModelFLabs has started up a brand new production line for his Model F clones. At $399 it's more than three times the price of the Unicomp New #ModelM, and while I realize it's damned close to religion, I'm also very very intrigued. I'll let you know if this is going to happen.

I'm really not a keyboard geek, but I do have a somewhat romantic relationship with the clicky-clicky #keyboards of the 80s. Getting a modern keyboard that goes click but isn't a vulgar pulsating gamer keyboard is nearly impossible, but I did come pretty close with the Varmilo TKL I'm using at the home office. Occasionally I hit a keyboard combination that turns on the LEDs which I really loathe, and I've seriously considered taking it apart to break a path on the PCB to disable the LEDs. Realizing that I was too lazy to actually do that, I ordered the New #ModelM from #Unicomp Inc. I've been eyeing it for a long time, and now's the time to give it a go. With postage being nearly as much as the keyboard itself as well as import tax and fees, this will in no way be neither a sane nor reasonable purchase. I expect it will be fun though. We'll see.
