Moby-Dick has weird pacing! Sometimes I find myself reading non-stop very fluidly and other times I struggle hard to finish a single chapter.
I mean, you can have several consecutive chapters with two/three pages each and suddenly you get hit by a 20 page long chapter with a secondary story or a technical sideline (like that awful chapter of weird whale typology)

Sometimes it might be of help to double-check the encyclopedia Mr. Melville 🫣

I'm counting the days when we can successfully communicate with sperm whales 🐳. We will finally be able to apologise for almost making them extinct because of our thirst for money and "progress".
And we could tell them one of the greatest books ever written by our civilization is about them! 😍
Melville would be proud. 🫶🏾

Also, when a woman (ew hetero) asks you if you want a clam or cod, she doesn't mean a single clam you insolent fucko.

If #MobyDick has taught me anything, it's that #sailors are #gay, #GayMarriage was always legal under #MaritimeLaw, and whaling ships are just big gay orgies, and that's why they don't want women there to tempt them into being straight.
This is simply a straightforward reading of the text. If you don't like it, maybe you don't like classic #American #Literature. 🇺🇸 📖 🫡

How can the prisoner reach outside except by thrusting through the wall?
Alas, he cannot...

Really wondering what the target demographic is for a pop-up edition of #MobyDick.

"In no living thing are the lines of beauty more exquisitely defined than in the crescentic borders of these flukes. At its utmost expansion in the full grown whale, the tail will considerably exceed twenty feet across." this guy likes whales #MobyDick #Literature #CurrentlyReading

A sea-monster movie borrowing the aesthetic of whaling epics inevitably sails into the shadow of Moby-Dick. The spectacle is fun, but the ideas feel smaller than the ocean they’re trying to cross. Big ships, bigger beasts… but the biggest stories are the ones with ideas deep enough to match the water.

...last chance to get the white whale [aka #MobyDick] they’ve been chasing for thirty years, an all-out regime change war against #Iran.
A new #MiddleEastWar would be a catastrophic mistake. Our military stockpiles are depleted from three years of backing #Ukraine. Our effort to reshore manufacturing has only just begun and will take years to bear fruit. War would worsen our already immense deficit and national debt. #Iran is larger than #Iraq, #Syria, and #Afghanistan combined. A war would...

Herman Melville's "Moby Dick" is one of the most famous books ever, probably, and while it was mentioned in many places, I never took interest in it. This all changed when I started following @mobydick, and from the quotes, I could clearly see the explicitly superb language; and that's with not even complete sentences sometimes. Then, I noticed that I can buy the whole thing for 7 euros; and so I did.
And this thread will be about what followed.

Well, I'm battened down as much as I can be, and since I'm flying solo this weekend, I might as well take advantage of the fireplace and settle into this week's book club reading.

Well, I've now heard Moby Dick. If I wasn't interested in 19th century whaling, then I wouldn't have continued it for much long, but even then I may have preferred an abridged version; I found myself repeatedly saying "Get to the point."
Enjoyed it some, but I don't recommend it tbh.

My most recent bookbinding project, made as gifts for the ringleaders of my online book club. To some extent, this is a Dad joke taken several steps too far, and an excuse to learn how to do a drum leaf binding.

Herman Melville's two categories for whales:
"Ohh, sweet baby 🥺 Every inch of you is perfect 🥰 "
vs
"😡Outlaws. Pirates. Loners. Thrashers.😡"

Moby Dick nei secoli e nel mondo.
Mostra abbastanza carina, alcuni pezzi contemporanei davvero interessanti.
