  1. There are plenty of ways we could go about building a mobile OS commons.

Most obviously AOSP could be forked, with distros like Replicant, /e/OS Lineageand Graphene rebasing on a community-driven variant of Android. With a de-Goggled stewardship organisation they all contribute dev resources and funds to as they can.

Also Mobile GNU is forging ahead. If you want to try it out, get hold of a PinePhone, Librem5, or an Android device that supports postmarketOS.

  2. If you use mobile apps, I strongly encourage you to figure out how to pay app developers who publish full source code, under free licenses.

Especially those who go to the effort to make their apps work on the Mobile GNU OS, as well as the duopoly mobile OS (Android and iOS). So you can keep using them if you escape Goggle and grApple's clutches, by getting a Mobile GNU device like the PinePhone or Librem5 (and hopefully many more to come)

  7. I finally got around to testing a bunch of GNU/Linux chat apps that support the @matrix protocol. Not one of them was suitable for production use;

... which I'm presuming means there still isn't a functional Matrix client for mobile GNU devices like the PinePhone and Librem5.

  8. The GNU Project turned 40 on Tuesday. Congratulations GNU!

In honour of the achievements of the multitude of talented people who have contributed to GNU over the last 40 years, I'm going to pull finger and teach mysefl how to install an updated mobile GNU OS on my PinePhone (props to the @PINE64 crew).

    > I was able to use my Librem 5 and Pure Maps for navigation throughout my trip. As general purpose navigation tool it did the job

Yet more encouragement to update the OS on my PinePhone and start using it...

    > GPS would drift 60-100 ft sometimes, moving me off route

I've also noticed this at times with OSMAnd+ on Android. Especially when using it to navigate while in a motor vehicle, as opposed to on foot or bike.

  10. "When I was inside, I often found myself using it with an external monitor using it’s included dock.

With this setup, I was surprised at how capable the PinePhone was as a laptop. I often found myself editing documents in LibreOffice, and at one point even managed to edit a video using Kdenlive!

Overall, even with its quirks, my year with the #PinePhone went quite well, and I never really found my self longing for my Android."

  11. Anyone out there willing to get on a voice/ video call and talk me through installing a fresh OS on a PinePhone? Sometimes over the next couple of weeks would be great.

I'm an old hand at replacing Windows with GNU/Linux on desktops and laptops, but I've never tried to install an OS on a mobile device.

  12. @strypey @jjardon I have seen people expressing an opinion that Android has drifted apart so much that they consider it not linux anymore. So in terms of reaching people and searchability a hashtag with the word linux is going to be good. Also, my weird brain, after seeing #MobileGNU would ask: Wait, is Hurd on mobile now? But that's just me.

  13. @jjardon
    > what do people think we should use for #linux on #mobile topics?

#MobileGNU. Android is already Linux on mobile. What you're describing is mobile OS that have GNU as the userland on top of the Linux kernel, instead of Android.

  15. If Snikket or Element could integrate the email protocol support from Delta Chat, in a way that supported E2EE with DC users (using Autocrypt), that would be my ideal comms client. Same if Delta Chat could support voice and video calling, over XMPP, matrix, and Jami protocols. Will SMS apps for MobileGNU integrate all this?

  16. Can I suggest using a landscape UI, rather than a portrait, for entering an encryption passphrase when booting a mobile device? That would allow for a larger keyboard, as well as a longer area for the dots that appear as a user types each passphrase character.

  17. Having spent a bit of time over the last week playing with PostmarketOS on a PinePhone, I can see why Purism has delayed the Librem5 for so long. Chances are the hardware was pretty much ready to ship on time, but delivering a user-friendly mobile GNU that justifies the Librem5 price tag is a much bigger ask.

  18. So I've finally checked out Element, the matrix client formerly known as Riot. The new look is a significant improvement on the web version of Riot. I'm looking forward to getting a PinePhone and checking out a mobile GNU version (if there is one).
