  1. Apple Goes Chatbot Agnostic in New AI Strategy
Refusing to commit to a single underlying model architecture. Apple's updated operating ecosystem chooses to distribute user requests across a fluid, marketplace-style interface, letting competitive external vendors bid on context execution while preserving local device boundaries.

  2. Just as the enterprise is wrapping its mind around #scalingAI in data centers, another seismic shift is emerging on the outskirts of corporate networks.

I'm talking about #edgeAI and #physicalAI. Over the last two months, companies ranging from #NVIDIA to #AT&T, #BoozAllenHamilton, #Cisco, #Comcast, #DellTechnologies, #Dynatrace, #HPE and #PersonalAI have been quietly laying the groundwork for the next generation of the internet and #mobilecomputing infrastructure, and the next generation of enterprise applications that run on them, according to industry watchers.

I spent the last few weeks having heady conversations with industry experts about what the next three to five years will hold for #AI cellular networks, robots, mobile phones, and of course, enterprise businesses.

Kicker quote from Bill Vass of Booz Allen:

"When I was at the Pentagon, we commercialized GPS, and I remember telling people that everyone will have a laptop screen in their car. They thought I was crazy, but I never thought about Lyft and Uber and DoorDash -- it's very hard to know, when you enable a capability, how people will use it."

  8. In the Old Days (2003-2004), a guy in the US called Julian Bleecker developed a portable WiFi node called wifi.bedouin which he toted around in a backpack. I was enthralled! Imagine being able to do that! I felt I'd like to do the same but I had very little money, lived in the UK and wasn't at Uni. Even so, I had a go, and my version - "Billy Nomad/YARWAP" was born. YARWAP=Yet Another Roaming Wireless Access Point ☺️

I wrote it up as I went along and today rediscovered the PDF, which is available for you reading pleasure at petergarner.net/projects/YARWA and Julian's is at nearfuturelaboratory.com/proje

I did actually take it outside a couple of times for testing, but in those days so few people had mobile devices that did WiFi, that it didn't really achieve its objective. Enjoy!

  17. I'm happy to be back on Mastodon! I'm excited to support the fantastic European tech scene, and this feels like a great way to do it. Plus, as many of you know, I love exploring the not-so-obvious.

Here, I'll be sharing my thoughts on #Android, #Kotlin, #Java, #MobileComputing, and #SoftwareEngineering, but also some personal stuff.

  18. CW: research review

This one is a long one and rather eclectic as I've gone off and picked up some ancient arXiv links I had saved for a rainy day (it is beautifully sunny here but with climate change that's the way it is…).

First of all some 2018 vintage papers which are still interesting:

    * "A Survey of Mobile Computing for the Visually Impaired"
    * "The dry history of liquid computers"

After you whet your appetite with the above here are the others:

    * "Visualising Personal Data Flows: Insights from a Case Study of Booking.com"
    * "How Secure is Code Generated by ChatGPT?"
    * "Maybenot: A Framework for Traffic Analysis Defenses"
    * "Censoring chemical data to mitigate dual use risk" [this one is "very cynicalsecurity", sorry...]
    * "Money Over Morals: A Business Analysis of Conti Ransomware"

The usual "tag cloud" for searching…

  20. I just got reality-slapped on HN regarding browser extension permissions:

There’s no practical way to distinguish between these two options for web extensions: once the extension can fiddle with the HTML on the page, it can use that power to make network requests (trivially, by inserting tags onto the page).

    The two options being:

    1. "Extension sees data on pages for which it's activated, and might modify that all kept locally", and

    2. "Extension sends all page information to The CloudWW Somebody Else's Computer where it is probably being shared with umpteen third parties, advertisingW behavioural manipulation and surveillance organisations, and will be preserved in crystal until the Heat Death Of The Universe.

    news.ycombinator.com/item?id=3

I'm not sure the issue is completely unsolveable, or that the situation can't be markedly improved. But my shallow first take is clearly incomplete.

That said: I'm exceedingly disappointed and frustrated with standard browser / mobile app permissions settings and granularity.

  21. After all these years and recent new #handheldpc like the #ClockworkPi #DevTerm or #uConsole this litte embedded #Linux powered device is still the winner in comparison for me. Battery lasts more than twice as the other two, lighter, better to type on, faster in terms of real world usage b/c of bloated linux these days...
