Q from me about effectiveness of advocacy against the trial balloon on end of security of tenure for tenants and how we can be that effective elsewhere. DCM: Groups that are focused on single issues need to come out of silos and work in coalition. And this is happening more and more. #MNTO
-
ZF asking about how to advocate more effectively. DCM: More Neighbours is a great voice, can fill in a great niche that I can't. The voice in who's speaking the message is important. #MNTO

DCM: Lobbied the mayor to make menstrual products for free to people on the street. I made it an easy win for him. #MNTO
-
ZF: In 2023 under John Tory as mayor, how did you get the warming centre system expanded? DCM: Tory was not easy. I had a couple of wins with Tory. Organized lots of letters from people who were upset that people were in the freezing cold. #MNTO

Continued 2: ZF: You've helped a lot of people navigate the system but what about changes to the system? DCM: In early pandemic was doing outreach. More encampments popped up. There have always been encampments in Toronto going back to The Ward. A number of people volunteered to do mutual aid. #MNTO

Q: Is there an opportunity for fundraising, land from the government, and off-site development. DCM: I feel like that could be the land trust model. Parkdale Land Trust was one of the first. Kensington, Chinatown, Etobicoke have land trusts. #MNTO
-
DCM: A lot of people aren't going to make it. That's just a fact. #MNTO
-
DCM has been called because someone made it to the top of a housing waitlist. The person who made it had been dead for four years. This has happened to her multiple times. #MNTO
-
DCM: Canada-Ontario Housing Benefit is helpful although don't love how it's like a subsidy to landlords rather than building more housing. Now cut to 570 people that can be helped with this program. We have 15,400 homeless people in the city. Usage of encampments is going to go way up #MNTO
-
DCM: Every day I see people who need housing and there's not much I can do for them directly. Can only refer them to the Housing Hub where they have to build a relationship with a new person. It's very high-barrier. #MNTO
-
ZF: If you lose your apartment, it takes $1800–$2000 to get into a new one. What do people need to get back into housing? DCM describes the system at City of Toronto where you have to have your taxes done to get help. For market rent there is no help. #MNTO
-
ZF: What gets people into homelessness and what gets them out? DCM: Everyone can be safe and happy and healthy if we give them opportunities and housing that can be sustained. #MNTO
-
ZF: What roles got you started in this area? What's kept you going? DCM: Relentless optimism is a personal failing but it keeps me going. Started at the Christie-Ossington Neighbourhood Centre and then to The Meeting Place. I like working on the front line. ##MNTO
-
DCM: We've had an astronomical shift in need for housing. It's not slowing down—it's getting worse. ##MNTO
