  1. Cider Freeze, underrated gem at $3. Very much needed after the afternoon humidity. #MNStateFair

  2. Dessert fries! I mean, they’re regular fries, but they’re the last thing we ate, so… #MNStateFair

  3. Rounding out the day with the Mexican Hat super soft taco. #MNStateFair

  4. Finally, in their third year, we finally tried a Peachey’s Amish donut thanks to Grammy standing in line while the rest of us did the eco building (and she beat us).

They are…actually pretty great. A breadier donut but still light, sweet but not overly glazed. #MNStateFair

  5. More drinks (it was stupid humid): Sweet Peach Lemonade Sparkler ($8). Coulda drank a gallon of it. Nicely balanced between sweet and tart. Pop rocks superfluous, but they’d sweet cream foam added a nice effervescence. #MNStateFair

  6. Frozen strawberry and mango daiquiris. Strawberry is the better of the two, but they’d be best combined (which is an option). #MNStateFair

  7. First actually new food of the year: brisket cheese curd taco (and the buffalo chicken taco, an old favorite). Brisket Taco was great, very flavorful but also rich; would be tough to eat two (you CAN mix & match w/brisket, despite how the menu looks). #MNStateFair

  8. Strawberries & Crème (original, not the new blueberry crème one). Not pictured, a highly refreshing strawberry iced tea. #MNStateFair

  9. Sweet Martha’s Cookies - normally we wouldn’t get these (hot take: they’re deeply overrated) but, well, we are here with the children today… #MNStateFair

  10. Best beer at the fair - Dill Pickle Kolsch. Though this year’s batch tastes a little off - too much “bread and butter pickle” flavor. #MNStateFair

  11. No new food at Giggles this year, so got Timbersticks, one of my faves of last year’s new foods. #MNStateFair

  12. Minnesota schedule: State Fair; Alabama Shakes

  13. First trip to the fair begins with the breakfast of champions: mini donuts (from Tom Thumb, the objectively best donuts at the fair). #MNStateFair

  14. Today's our first day going to the #MNStateFair this year. Weird Al tonight. And the Roe Family Singers in the afternoon. I'm thinking they won't be doing this song, though.

    We're bringing our whistles. IYKYK

    Farmer’s Muffin Top

Patisserie 46's blueberry muffin is already a thing of beauty. Here, they've somehow improved upon it by serving just the top of the muffin — you know, the best part — which comes out warm and wonderful. $10 does feel high for what you get, but hey, fair-flation is real. And we'd probably pay even more if every fair bite could be this blissful.

Plz tell them. Seinfeld’s Elaine Benes had that idea in the 90s. It was a joke!

  16. Minnesotans have a prickly relationship with the Texas State Fair and their fuzzy attendance math, but unfortunately, no one has done a story (yet) about the X-Men visiting the MN State Fair. #XMen #MNStateFair

  17. Awesome, the Minnesota State Fair is improving the bicycle parking, better racks and now helmet storage. I've been carrying my helmet with me since I started biking to the Fair:

"Folks who bike to the Fair will find new bike racks and expanded capacities at each of the Fairgrounds’ three free bike lots...Secure helmet storage is also available..."

  19. The Minnesota State Fair is going on, and it's a tradition there to find the craziest food that is either (1) fried, or (2) served on a stick. (Or both.)

Some great math folks -- in particular, Chris Danielson of talkingmathwithkids.com/ -- started "Math On a Stick" at the State Fair years ago.

I volunteered there last week. It was super fun! Any math lovers in the Twin Cities should consider doing so.
