I’ve completed draft 1 of my 1st #SF novel #Volition 🚀
It’s been a goal since 2015 when I completed my Eng Lit degree.
I’m thinking, “Shoulda done this years ago!” but that’s irrelevant, as I’ve done it now 🥲

Still heaps of work ahead, but that’s tomorrow, today is for enjoying this. 🥳

A bit over 2.5k words to go. Good chance I’ll get to 50k tomorrow.

My main concern is finishing off the narrative. I’m right there, at the end, 61 chapters, just now, and maybe I can wrap it up in another 5 or 6 chapters I think.

But I’m almost scared to finish. This month has been a personal phenomenon. I don’t want it to end.

Not there yet, but a few weeks ago it seemed truly impossible. No celebrating yet, but soon- 🤭

Still cracking along. My writing is at the point now where while it’s a little hard to get going again, once I have started it’s not too hard to just keep going. I’ve never written like this for so long. It’s becoming very satisfying.

Tomorrow I will catch back up to and then exceed my projected word count again.

Today’s words mean that over the last four days I’ve written 10,179 words. This is easily the most productive I’ve ever been in such a short period.

The best thing is I’m loving the narrative right now. It’s flowing out. 😁 14k words to go and I can see it’s all coming together.

Had a slow weekend as I meandered down the long and boring narrative road, but some adjustments and two chapters rewritten and it’s firing once again. Tension building, excitement too.

The hardest thing about #NaNoWriMo is the continual effort of invention.

Even if you know where the narrative starts and where it ends and the big events in between, many more small events are needed to fill 50k words.

It also needs to be engaging with a sense of building tension. This is where one’s craft comes in.

It’s an amazing experience, a humbling fire consuming old mental structures yet powering the creation of new ways of thinking.

Mentally draining, when reaching a narrative point not knowing how to proceed. I’ve learned to take five, let it percolate and trust the way forward to come to mind.

Emotionally draining too, feels great when I pull ahead, stressed when I fall behind.

But still where I must be to succeed. 🥳

I had a very light day yesterday, mainly as I’d written into a narratively dull corner and wasn’t at all excited.

When I’m not excited, I stop writing, as I can’t expect the reader to feel excited if I’m not when I’m writing it.

Lots of thinking 🤔 & midday today an idea got me really excited again, so got back to writing.

After dropping the ball on Friday (Day 3) due to that old “Busy Life” and only writing 500 words, I’ve finally caught up today, and am now ahead of my scheduled total goal.

Wait, that can’t be correct. Checks notes- damn! Almost 10k words in 5 days. Why haven’t I done this before? 🤔

Those who have done #NaNoWriMo in the past, when is the time into the process when you’ve found you hit the wall?

I ask as it’s my first time and while it’s fine for the first two days, I get a sense that at some point in the next few days or perhaps even in a week or two that I’ll hit a mental wall and need a do something to get through.

Any tips? :-)

Comprised of three sessions, each providing another chapter of my novel.
So far so good. Prior to each session I felt a little unsure of how it would go, but each time once I’ve started writing the words have been flowing out. Hopefully it keeps up. Having a plan of what needs to be written in each session makes all the difference.

I’ve been doing some planning for #nanowrimo while doing some #editing for an anthology. I love editing.

But gee, nanowrimo seems pretty scary up close. Nothing for it though but to -make- -it- -work- 😊 I mean 50k is a short novel, and I’m using it get that dreaded first draft done and dusted.

Yay, I just finished the third chapter of my #SF novel, in which my washed-up protagonist is found in a dank London pub and called back to duty with the offer of just revenge.

This writing-in-the-morning thing is certainly working for me. 😊

Yay, just finished the #prologue of my #novel. Calling it done for now and moving right along to chapter 1, which will introduce the overarching antagonist. Which is quite exciting. :-)

Part of having a writing habit can be having a specific time and place to write.

For me, I have recently set up a little tiny desk in a quiet corner that holds a little tablet with a keyboard that is for nothing but writing, and so far it seems to be working quite well.

Do you have a special place for writing. Or are you able to write anywhere, anyhow?

I’ve gone back to an old #novel I’ve been writing for years- this time I’m getting it done! 😉

But, in doing so I have decided to change the prose text from past-tense to present-tense to give the #narrative some extra tension and forward drive.

It’s working out so far, but I’m not entirely convinced it’s the right thing to do. Most narratives are written in past-tense after all, so it might make my novel less inviting.

Thoughts? 🙂

Came up with a concept while driving the car yesterday, stuck in traffic. Couldn’t capture it right away so had to think about it heaps so i wouldn’t forget it.

Got my notes down now, so that’s good, I think I’ll start it this morning.

How do you capture ideas when you get them? And how to you try to make yourself remember them later when you can’t put the down straight away?

A quick bit of writing before I head into work. Last night i didn’t think I would, as time is tighter when going into the office, but once I had my coffee, I just sat down to look at this and that, and before long I was writing anyway. Perhaps this morning habit is going to stick.

I’ve set some weekly goals for the next four weeks on the same longer form text, so good to have some immediate goals that will add up to into one thing.

Another Monday morning and I’m writing before the day begins. That means three weeks in a row. Not heaps into it today, but that’s ok. Still writing something, still working to build a habit. Still sitting at what I’m starting to call my writing desk while I drink my coffee instead of lounging on the coach doomscolling. I’ll take this as a win.

Do you have any particular ways to motivate writing on days when you’re not especially inclined to write?

Writing a #flashfiction for my local writers group. 350 words with the prompt: birthday party, locked cupboard, twins. The variety is always interesting when we read our stories aloud.

Have trouble keeping it short? First, write without concern for word count.📚

Then hack and prune that wild shrub.🌳

Select one word instead of three.📌 Delete any sentence that changes nothing.✂️ Repeat. ♻️

You’ll be left with a flowering rose bush.🌹

Ok, I finally finished a version of my new short story and submitted it for consideration in a YA Fantasy anthology. Here’s hoping it is selected.

Beyond that, while it’s taken consistent and considered work to get it where I liked, the feeling of achievement and dare I say it joy in having gotten this far makes it all worthwhile either way.

But, onto the next thing now: a micro-narrative for my local writers group 🙂
