The one-drop rule was a legal doctrine designed to protect slavery's property logic. It's now just... how Wikipedia works.

Are there any good JP non-katakana words to explain mixed heritage?
I know "konketsu" is a thing, but I've never heard it used in a positive way.
But then, there are older folks who don't understand the loanword uses of "mix(ed)" and "roots," so it makes me wonder if there aren't any good words for conversations with them 🤔 -

Health benefits to passing as white
Having mixed-race parentage and not really fitting in, sometimes people accused me of trying to pass. I do wonder how much having a fair-skinned teacher mother helped me with teachers who otherwise would have written me off. It's known there are stressors for those having a minority race. This article that passing seems to have helped those who were passing I found to be wild. For many Black people living in the United States in the 20th century, changing their racial identity didn’t […]https://polymathparent.wordpress.com/2025/03/04/health-benefits-to-passing-as-white/

CW: USpol; Harris being mixed-race is no weirder than having two parents
For anyone who doesn't understand how VP Harris can be Black and Indian at the same time, it's simple: it's like having two parents. I am "my father's son" and "my mother's son" *at the same time*. Nobody would ask, "Well, what kind of parent do you have? Do you have a father, or do you have a mother?" 1/3

I think part of the reason it's hard for some people to accept the existence of #MixedRace folks is because #race itself is a social construct
Your race is usually given to you by the society in which you live, & from there, folks will assume your place in society, how to treat you, etc etc
But such is not the case for mixed folksBecause ‼️ the only ones who can decide how a mixed person should identify is the mixed person themself ‼️
Our very existence challenges the use society has for race as a concept, so folks who've only ever thought of race as something real & concrete end up not knowing how to deal with it
