A few years ago, a colleague from the #green #schools movement said to me, "You can't do it all, Gamal." Although I agree, that doesn't mean that an #undemocratic #economy does not impact #education , #housing, #employment, #energy, #transportation, #healthcare, and #climate.

In 1983's A Nation at Risk, U.S. President #Reagan blamed public education for the apparent demise of the U.S. economy, as if low-wealth people were responsible for a #recession. 25 years later, President #Obama blamed teachers for the financial crisis of 2008, as if a profession where 75% of the #teachers are #women was somehow responsible for the irresponsible and unethical decisions of well-heeled men on #WallStreet. #classism , #racism #misogony.

Well before Reagan's anti-civic narrative, the U.S. had been – and continues to be – one of the wealthiest countries on the planet. And #students still attend #publicschools that are in disrepair, that are crowded, that induce #asthma through inadequate #AirQuality, that provide sugar-laden candy posing as #breakfast cereal, and that substitute asphalt #parking lots for lush, green #playgrounds.

So, what s the call to action? In short, whatever is good enough for #wealthy #children should be good enough for all children. #Makeitso.

Or is awareness enough, especially for a beleagured population chasing, or trying to hold on to, #middleclass ranking?

And/or do some #liberals vote against their own interests when a #political #candidate is deemed "too left?"
