Love Philip Glass. Gave Mishima much-deserved airplay on my one radio show back in the day.

I saw #Mishima - A Life In Four Parts when it was shown on UK tv in the late 80s. I was spellbound by it. Made by director Paul Schrader - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paul_Schrader it is unlike any film I had seen.
It must have been the first time I'd heard Philip Glass music. I found the line when one of the characters in a film within the film sees the Golden Temple for the first time ("It's too beautiful") almost unbearable, which is intentional. It's a demanding watch but worth it.

“There is no special right to happiness and none to unhappiness. There is no tragedy and there is no genius. Your confidence and your dreams are groundless. If there is on this earth something exceptional, special beauty or special evil, nature finds it out and uproots it.”

Japan boasts the peaceful violence of a country refusing to be subdued. It's the confidence of the Jiujitsu master calmly letting you pin him, only to submit you from his back. Patient and resilient, it's myrmecophilous dedication in accomplishing the task at hand is burned into the country's DNA.

A great double feature: two very different perspectives on the life of Mishima, a gay ultranationalist author, one of the most important figures in Japanese literature, who built an army of followers, attempted a coup d'état and committed suicide.
Serious take: Paul Schrader’s Mishima: A Life in Four Parts (1985), award winner at Cannes, produced by Coppola and George Lucas.
Fun take: Beautiful Mystery (1983), soft-core gay porn depicting the “actions” inside Mishima’s army.

3 things about Lewis John Carlino’s THE SAILOR WHO FELL FROM GRACE WITH THE SEA [1976]
1. A tiny beating heart.
2. “Strange and sad.” His mother through the peephole.
3. Without much discretion, he takes out the pair of rubber gloves. -

Let us remember, however, that in certain writers considered "cruel," the very description of evil is an act of compassion, which does not need to be expressed with exclamation marks. Flaubert chronicles with clinical aloofness Emma Bovary's death; we know that he felt for her, and even, identifying himself with her, loved her. Mishima: A Vision of the Void, p. 55.
