  1. Touché, inner self, touché.
Finally got this UFO chandelier working again. It's been unusable, powered off for ages, ever since I cross-wired something in the ceiling receptacle while trying to install a smart switch in the wall.
The wiring in that receptacle is an odd set-up, with lines in from the circuit box, lines out to other rooms, and lines to the wall switch. Counting

  2. Nipper Gives a Listen to My Win11 Chromebook!
Happy (thrilled? relieved?) to announce that the HP x360 Chromebook running Windows 11 now has speaker drivers. With this step, the transition to Win11 on a newish Chromebook is complete!

(In related news, I've now officially canceled my MS 365 subscription, which seems contradictory. But it's all part of the masterplan. Nyahaha!

  3. Steam Deck Playstation
Linux has sort of scared me. Sure, I come from a pre-desktop generation, typing things like C:\>D\lester\games\nevadasmith.exe on a black screen to launch a program. But Apple and Windows soon spoiled me with desktops and mice, with clickable icons and framed program screens with mouseover menus. I didn’t want to return to command line boxes if I could at all avoid

  4. Abracadabra, OpenSUSE Me!
Last week I posted about rescuing a 12-year-old Acer C710 Chromebook someone sent me, by installing Bodhi Linux. Already I've come to love that distro for its user friendliness and light footprint. I'm fairly astonished at how smoothly the thing operates, and that even with LibreOffice, the Cheese webcam recorder (I'll be using for game demo videos), and the Telegram deskt

  5. Another Rescue Chromebook
I hate dumping old electronics just because they've reached OS end of service, and Chromebooks are notorious in that regard. Google is getting better about extended lifespan, but in the meantime there are countless "worthless" old Chromebooks headed to a landfill.

But I've also come to love Chromebooks themselves for the role they fill: inexpensive, lightwei

  6. Jonesing for Journey
A few years ago, I bought a PS4 (to play Rock Band 4, a disappointment), and picked up a few other titles, including a couple of walking sims: Dear Esther & Journey.

Dear Esther is gorgeous and emotionally moving. It's definitely worth playing through a couple of times.

Journey is Zen-like. The graphical design is truly lovely; the musical score

  7. Button, Button – Who’s Got The Button?

Very unexpected find today. I'm pretty confident that that's my very first Question Authority button...[…]

  8. Dogwalking...
...but no dogs. A periodic thread.

Boring explanation: I often take snaps while walking the dogs, but they're nearly always phone camera shots, not DSLR shots, so the quality has been the lesser of my talent and the phone's technology. Over time my talent hasn't improved, but phone cameras have, so some of the pix are bearable.

The technology spans almost the entire history of phone cameras, starting with my bleeding-edge Sony Ericsson P910i, a wonderful phone and a terrible (640x480) camera, and then meanders through iPhones from 3GS upwards.

Although I mentioned dogs, they don't figure in the pictures (apart from this first shot), because like my kids and grandkids they're entitled to their privacy; however these are (nearly) all pictures taken while in their company.

I'll thread this, which is how all these hashtags are relevant...

First pic, a selfie with the dogs (portrait mode, you may have to click in), followed by a couple of venerable P910i shots, not actually with the dogs but examples of the state of the art :-)
