  1. Politicians still flinch at the ghost of 2010: Kevin Rudd's bold Resource Super Profits Tax on mining super-profits triggered a $22M+ mining ad blitz, tanked polls, and helped force his ousting by Gillard. She watered it down fast — the lesson? Don't poke the resources bear without allies.
This time it's narrower (just gas + thermal coal windfalls, not all mining), Treasury-modelling quietly pre-budget, and public anger at $2+ petrol + war-driven prices gives cover. No ad war yet, and Greens/unions are pushing hard.
But the gas lobby's already grumbling. If Albo goes too hard without buy-in, history could rhyme. Fingers crossed they learn from Rudd's fall and thread the needle: tax the windfalls properly, fund Aussies, don't get knifed.

At 800 hectares a year, 20 years comes to 16,000 hectares of never to be returned jarah forest gone.
That's a square from Trigg Island east to Dianella, from there south to Coode St South Perth, then west to Cottesloe Beach and back up to Trigg Island.

    That's a huge loss.

  3. The hypocrisy is breathtaking. Peter Costello, now a "respected commentator," laments that Australia hasn't balanced a budget for 15 years.
But who laid the foundation for that structural deficit? Costello and John Howard. They squandered a once-in-a-generation mining boom and the proceeds from selling our public assets.
Instead of a sovereign wealth fund like Norway's to secure our future, they gave it away in permanent tax cuts and middle-class welfare. They sold gold at the bottom of the market. They left us vulnerable to the next crisis.
Now he lectures us on fiscal responsibility? The architect is blaming the builders.

Oh. Let's not have progressive taxation?
    No #MiningTax, no #CarbonTax, no #MillionaireSuperTax?

Let's bleed the PAYG punters dry instead and keep using unlawful and not-fit-for-purpose ways of kicking leaners on benefit payments?

Labor - neoliberals behind the mask.

  6. We were reminded of when we read about something that happened in #Australia, the #KevinRuddCoup. Wikipedia completely mis-characterised the defining moment in our #history.

Our understanding is Wikipedia do this a lot. Its clearly a 'political tool'.

We could say, believing it is "apolitical" makes one a 'political fool'.

(Yes it rhymes and is the worse attempt at humor today.)

  7. Just watched #ABC #UnderCover & these are last few words on the show:
"The great Australian dream might be over. Maybe it's time to build a new dream."
Yes it is & it wouldn't be that hard if we had a mining/resource tax like Norway. Imagine the $billions we could use to build social housing.

For a mere $21 million, a handful of multinational corporations, led by #BHP and the Minerals Council, saved themselves countless billions in tax payments, which drained government revenues and helped ensure the nation's finances remained in deficit for decades #mining #MiningTax #auspol #boganNation

He was good on #JulianAssange. He even arranged an effective #miningTax that would go into a #SovereignWealthFund for things we genuinely needed, like plans for a real #NBN (#fibreToTheHome) plan. During the GFC he gave $1000 to each person, swiftly averting the crisis. He was on a tear. He was even able to reduce the number of people coming to Australia to be #exploited.

But during the insulation scheme rollout a couple people died and…(6/9)
