[EN] Even the ancient Romans... No, I don't want to go back that far. But let's take a brief look at the Ancien Régime, i.e. the time before 1789! The territory of today's Saarland was divided into many small dominions - as was usual in the Holy Roman Empire. Some parts (such as Saarlouis and the surrounding area) belonged to France, some to the Electorate of Trier and some to the Principality of Nassau-Saarbrücken, and so on and so forth. In the middle of the 18th century, Wilhelm Heinrich von Nassau Saarbrücken bought up all the mines, creating a state monopoly and prohibiting private mining. The mines remained state-owned even under France; although there were plans for privatisation, they were not implemented. The mines also remained state-owned under Prussia (and Bavaria).
