The territory of today's Saarland was divided into many small dominions - as was usual in the Holy Roman Empire. Some parts (such as Saarlouis and the surrounding area) belonged to France, some to the Electorate of Trier and some to the Principality of Nassau-Saarbrücken, and so on and so forth. In the middle of the 18th century, Wilhelm Heinrich von Nassau Saarbrücken bought up all the mines, creating a state monopoly and prohibiting private mining. The mines remained state-owned even under France; although there were plans for privatisation, they were not implemented. The mines also remained state-owned under Prussia (and Bavaria).

[EN] Yesterday we established that the present-day federal state of Saarland was known as the Saarstate from 1947-57, the Reichsland Saarland from 1935-45 and the Territory of the Saar Basin from 1920-35.
From 1815-1918, however, the majority of the region belonged to the Pruss. Rhineprovince, a much smaller part belonged to the Bavarian Palatinate and even smaller parts to the principalities of Lichtenberg (Rhineprovince from 1834) and Birkenfeld. In this project about the environmental history, the industrial areas in the Prussian and Bavarian parts play a particularly important role, as this is where the greatest impact on the environment occurred. We refer to the Saar-district or Saar-region without implying any kind of identification of the people living there as "Saarlanders". Saar-region and Saar-district are also source terms for the Prussian mining district, but not for the part of the Bav. Palatinate.

[DE] Gestern haben wir also etabliert, dass das "heutige Bundesland" Saarland von 1947-57 als Saarstaat, von 1935-45 als Reichsland Saarland und von 1920-35 als Saargebiet bezeichnet wurde.
Von 1815 bis 1918 aber gehörte der Großteil der Region zur Preußischen Rheinprovinz, ein deutlich kleinerer Teil gehörte zur Bayerischen Pfalz und noch kleinere Teile zu den Fürstentümern Lichtenberg (ab 1834 Rheinprov.) und Birkenfeld. In dem Projekt zur Umweltgeschichte spielen vor allem die Industriegebiete im preußischen und bayerischen Teil eine Rolle, da es dort zu den größten Auswirkungen auf die Umwelt kam. Wir sprechen hier von Saarrevier oder Saarregion, ohne dabei eine wie auch immer geartete Identifikation der dort lebenden Menschen als Saarländerinnen oder Saarländer zu implizieren. Saarregion & Saarrevier sind dabei auch Quellenbegriffe für das preußische Montanrevier, jedoch nicht für den Teil der bayer. Pfalz.
