  1. "#Racism and #blacknationalism
The Anti-Defamation League #ADL classifies #Farrakhan as a #racist,[68] and the Southern Poverty Law Center considers the Nation of Islam (NOI) as a hate group and a black nationalist organization.[69] According to the SPLC, the #NOI asserts that black people are racially superior to white people[69] and promotes a "fundamentally anti-white theology"[70] amounting to an "innate black superiority over whites".[69] According to the NOI, whites were created 6,600 years ago as a "race of devils" by an evil scientist named Yakub,[70] a story which originated with the founder of the NOI, Wallace D. Fard.[69]"

The #MillionManMarch happened while I was in that class. Probably recruiting. I can't believe i experienced that. I did not go. Maybe i felt like i was in some kind of concentration camp. We probably were, in certain respects. technically speaking. You know how college is.

    I stand by my claim:
Dr Bell was a professor, and I learned important, meaningful, race-agnostic (that's not the right word?)

Again. I still say thank you, Dr Bell.

I need to do some research to find out what became of him. He had to be near retirement in '95.

  2. I've written a blog post that is a preliminary draft of a paper about the importance of the organizing of the 1995 #MillionManMarch in constructing coalitional unity. I'm interested in getting feedback from people who might know something about this topic. #BlackHistory #SocialMovements @sociology @politicalscience ssc.wisc.edu/soc/racepoliticsj

  3. Next going through the articles in the #MillionManMarch in our data. Figured out how to extract them from the database into both Stata and Word so I can do both quantitative and qualitative analysis. Organize them by date and newswire vs. Black news. What did the articles say? It took me about two days to get the articles organized and parts of a very rough draft of findings/patterns written up. Findings seem interesting. Pressing ahead. #Research #WritingProcess

  4. Check the #Literature on the #MillionManMarch. Review articles I've already found. Search SocIndex, find almost nothing in @sociology . Check Google Scholar. Find a little more. Check the references in books I've read, find a little more, including angles & have not thought of in @politicalscience. Still not a lot. Maybe there is a paper here, although I think the main pattern is well recognized in what has been written.

  5. #WritingProcess The plan is to write up short empirical pieces for blogs or preprints, then work it into a more formal paper. Empirics on #NewsCoverage of #MillionManMarch will be interesting even if there's nothing new to add to theory or analysis.

  6. Wondering whether anyone is interested in an ongoing thread about the process of #DataCleaning and #PaperWriting in our project about #NewsCoverage of #BlackProtest in mainstream newswires and Black newspapers. Lots of data to clean (~10K articles & ~10K events), so looking for ways to get papers along the way. We clean data by issue cluster, so I reviewed the #MillionManMarch articles & decided to see if there is a paper about that. I think I saw some interesting patterns.

  7. A Life of Atonement

Reflection – Day of Atonement – Million Man March – October 16, 1995 – Washington DC

My brothers spoke today and though it is different I too must give and live a confession. I too have let the bigness of what must be done keep me from the little I can do. I pray as I am sure many are doing tonight that today would be the first step in the healing of our nation.

We must not let our opinion of the proclaimer keep us from the truth he proclaims. I heard a call for atonement and if there is one thing this world needs it is atonement. I heard a call for dialogue, a denunciation of antisemitism, quotes from Mohammed, Jesus and Moses. It saddens me that already, an hour after the March, the cynics are out in full force.

There was much truth spoken today and I for one do hereby proclaim that I will take responsibility for my life, that I will live a life based on Providence not fate, and that I will cease to play craps with the gifts that God has given me.

There is much I do not know, but I do know this. From this day forward I will not back down from what I believe and what must be done to heal myself, this land, and my people.

God, give me the strength and courage to live again, in the name of Jesus, the oppressed, misunderstood, victorious One, your Son. Amen.
